Position Overview

The Field Service Technician (FST) provides non-licensed technical support for commercial HVAC and plumbing systems. This role includes field troubleshooting, startup assistance, and limited warranty service for pumps, variable frequency drives (VFDs), and vibration isolation systems.

This position is approximately 70% field-based, working alongside licensed mechanical or plumbing contractors, and 30% warehouse-based for training, equipment preparation, and assembly support. The technician will act as a key technical resource ensuring systems operate to manufacturer specifications.

Key ResponsibilitiesField Support (Primary)

  • Provide on-site troubleshooting and commissioning assistance for hydronic systems, pumps, and VFDs.
  • Diagnose field issues including vibration, flow imbalance, noise, seal leaks, and misalignment.
  • Conduct precision laser shaft alignments and verify proper pump/motor rotation.
  • Program and adjust variable frequency drives (VFDs) under non-energized conditions.
  • Support contractors during system startups and ensure installations meet manufacturer guidelines.
  • Perform non-energized warranty repairs, including seal, bearing, or impeller replacements.
  • Maintain clear, professional communication with contractors, engineers, and facilities teams.
  • Complete digital service reports documenting issues, diagnostics, and recommendations.

Technical Development

  • Participate in factory and in-house training for supported product lines.
  • Stay current with technical bulletins, product updates, and equipment changes.
  • Relay recurring field trends or quality issues to management for continuous improvement.

Warehouse & Assembly Support

  • Assist with light pump assembly, tagging, painting, and staging for shipment.
  • Maintain field tool inventory, calibration, and readiness.
  • Support internal builds to enhance product knowledge.
  • Participate in safety meetings and continuous improvement initiatives.

Work Environment

  • Work performed in commercial mechanical rooms, rooftops, outdoor pump pads, and warehouse facilities.
  • Must lift up to 50 lbs and work in warm, confined environments typical of mechanical spaces.
  • Operates company-provided service vehicle and tools under established safety guidelines.

QualificationsRequired

  • Minimum 3 years of field experience in HVAC, plumbing, or mechanical systems.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude; capable with alignment tools, gauges, and diagnostics.
  • Understanding of hydronic systems, centrifugal pumps, and VFDs.
  • Valid driver's license and clean driving record.
  • Ability to read mechanical drawings and service documentation.

Preferred

  • Experience with Pumps, Variable frequency Drives, Boilers, Packaged Booster Systems, and other Hydronic equipment.
  • Forklift certification and OSHA 10/30 training.
  • Familiarity with CRM or field service reporting systems.
  • Prior experience working with commercial mechanical contractors.
