Job Title: Principal Applications Scientist – Mass Spectrometry & Semiconductor Applications

Location: Milpitas, CA

Position Summary:

The Principal Applications Scientist will lead technical engagements with customers, develop application-specific solutions around our instruments, and contribute to product roadmaps. This is a highly visible, customer-facing role requiring expertise in mass spectrometry, analytical instruments, and semiconductor processes.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop deep operational knowledge of our instruments under development.
  • Configure, calibrate, validate, and test instruments for performance.
  • Support Aston evaluations at semiconductor OEMs and fabs.
  • Conduct on-site setup, debugging, and performance analysis of systems.
  • Identify application-specific customer requirements and develop tailored HW/SW solutions.
  • Deliver customer-facing presentations, demos, and technical training sessions.
  • Acquire and analyze samples from prospective customers, providing analysis reports.
  • Collaborate with product development to define next-generation products and translate system specifications into component-level requirements.
  • Strengthen customer relationships through technical competence and excellent communication.

Requirements:

  • M.Sc. (6+ years experience) or Ph.D. (2+ years experience) in Physics, Chemistry, Electrical Engineering, or related field.
  • 5+ years hands-on experience developing mass spectrometry-based solutions.
  • Experience with analytical instruments such as mass spectrometers, gas analyzers, or plasma diagnostics.
  • Familiarity with semiconductor manufacturing processes (etch, CVD, ALD).
  • Experience with control hardware (PLC) and scripting in Python or LabView is desirable.
  • Proven success in pre-sale customer engagement and technical presentations.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Self-motivated, collaborative, and comfortable working in dynamic, early-stage environments.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Electronics/electrical engineering background.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to diagnose and debug complex systems.

Travel: Up to 30% domestic and international travel.

  • Customer-focused, proactive, and self-driven.
  • Team-oriented with strong collaboration and mentoring abilities.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $160, $180,000.00 per year
