Job Description

Be a part of a world-class academic healthcare system, UChicago Medicine as a Sterile Processing Manager in the Sterile Processing Department. This position is a 100% onsite opportunity. You will need to be based in the greater Chicagoland area.

In this role as a Sterile Processing Manager, you will have 24 hours, 7 days a week accountability for maintaining departmental operations in all hospital sterile processing areas.  Operates, directs and supervises the department and all related systems in an efficient and effective manner. Utilizes time management skill to prioritize departmental activities and tray reprocessing.  Responsible for the planning, organizing, staffing, directing and controlling all group personnel and activities of the department. Develop, articulates and ensures adherence to high standards of operational performance and resource utilization. Will be proficient in available technology, i.e. SPM inventory management system. Will be required to use independent judgment in the discharge of their duties.

Essential Job Functions

  • Interviews, selects, orients and evaluates employees and initiates corrective action as necessary and according to hospital and departmental policies and bargaining unit contracts. Hears and adjust grievances or advises other to adjust grievance
  • Provides administrative support to the Director of CSP, VP for Materials Management, Infection Control and Patient Safety
  • Ensures that departmental operations are in compliance with standards set by regulatory agencies and JCAHO
  • Responsible for the development of policies, procedures and maintenance standards for Sterile Processing areas
  • Reviews annual operating and capital budgets for approval and monitors performance of the department to stay within budget and demonstrated proper fiscal management of the department
  • Organizes, operates and supervisors the Central Sterile Processing department and all related functions and systems in efficient and effective manner
  • Analyzes departmental statistics for all aspects relating to optimum performance and implement needed process improvement measures
  • Reviews and maintains permanent records of all quality assurance aspects of sterilization, aeration, bacterial monitoring or other functions of the area
  • Demonstrates leadership and collaborative management skills and effective verbal and written communications skills. This includes documentation, communication and/or presentations
  • Establishes internal inventory levels and maintains levels in accordance with standards necessary to provide good patient care
  • Ensures that a comprehensive departmental orientation for all new personnel and required training to all staff is provided on an ongoing base. Documented competencies on all staff will be reviewed with supervisor periodically.  Prepares and administers all staff performance reviews in a timely manner
  • Promotes team building inter and intra departmentally
  • Maintains visibility through interfacing with physicians and nursing staff through routine rounds throughout their customer base
  • Attends all inter and intra departmental meetings as appropriate
  • Provides direction and support for product standardization for both clinical supplies and equipment
  • Ensures environmental cleanliness for all areas
  • Maintains continued education in the field of sterile processing and materials management through education, literature, seminars, etc

  • Develops and implements departmental performance improvement activities and assures ongoing staff participation
  • Utilizes SPM technology for process improvement, staff performance, etc
  • Respects the rights, privacy and property of others at all times, including confidentiality information for both staff and patients, according to administrative policies and applicable laws and regulations
  • Acts as resource and support to supervisory and other subordinate staff
  • Handles special and emergency requests as needed. Coordinates resolutions and communicates resolution to administration, physicians and subordinates
  • Performs any other related tasks as deemed necessary for the successful operation of the department
  • Performs other duties as requested by senior management.

Required Qualifications

  • High School graduate or equivalent required.
  • Thorough knowledge of OR instrumentation with medical terminology and operating room process required.
  • Must have 5 years as a CS technician and 2 years in leadership.
  • Must possess knowledge of all modalities of sterilization.
  • Be able to act as resource to all subordinate staff as well as customer population. Case Cart and inventory experience necessary. 
  • Departmental budget experience required.
  • Must have good verbal and written communication skills. Basic computer knowledge required. 
  • Must be proficient in word, excel, and e-mail.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate or Bachelor degree preferred.
  • RN, LPN, or OR Tech with OR experience preferred.
  • Purchasing experience preferred.
  • Experience in dealing with employees covered under bargaining unit contracts highly preferred.
  • PowerPoint experience

Licenses/Certifications

  • Certification for Central Service Technician required

Compensation & Benefits Overview

UChicago Medicine is committed to transparency in compensation and benefits.  The pay range provided reflects the anticipated wage or salary reasonably expected to be offered for the position.

The pay range is based on a full-time equivalent (1.0 FTE) and is reflective of current market data, reviewed on an annual basis. Compensation offered at the time of hire will vary based on candidate qualifications and experience and organizational considerations, such as internal equity. Pay ranges for employees subject to Collective Bargaining Agreements are negotiated by the medical center and their respective union.
