Child Watch Counselor

Job Summary
Are you passionate about helping children learn, grow, and have fun in a safe and caring environment? The YMCA of Greater Houston is seeking an energetic and dependable Child Watch Counselor to join our team. In this role, you'll provide a safe, engaging, and nurturing space for children while their parents or guardians participate in YMCA programs and activities.
Key Responsibilities
- Supervise and interact with children to ensure a safe, positive, and developmentally appropriate experience.
- Create an inclusive and welcoming environment that reflects the YMCA's core values of Caring, Honesty, Respect, Responsibility, and Faith.
- Facilitate age-appropriate games, crafts, and play activities that encourage creativity, teamwork, and social development.
- Maintain cleanliness and organization in the Child Watch area, including sanitizing toys and equipment.
- Attend to children's basic needs, such as restroom assistance and comfort when upset.
- Communicate effectively with parents, guardians, and staff regarding child participation or behavioral concerns.
- Follow all YMCA safety and child protection policies, including emergency procedures and sign-in/out protocols.
- Work collaboratively with other team members to maintain smooth transitions and consistent care during shifts.
Qualifications
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- CPR, First Aid, and AED certification (or willingness to obtain within 30 days of hire).
- Child abuse prevention and safety training required (provided by the YMCA).
- Previous experience working with children in a group or childcare setting preferred.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills; able to engage with both children and adults in a professional and friendly manner.
- Reliable, attentive, and able to manage multiple tasks in an active environment.
- Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds and remain active and mobile throughout the shift.

Work Environment & Schedule
- Work takes place in an indoor Child Watch area, with occasional outdoor play activities.
- Moderate noise level typical of childcare settings.
- Flexible part-time schedule, with shifts available during daytime, evening, and weekend hours.
