The Roads and Grounds unit of the Division of Facilities and Services at West Virginia University is accepting applications for a Lead Campus Service Worker.
About the Opportunity:
The Lead Campus Service Worker will provide support services to the Institution. Provide leadership in setting up for special events, moves, and completing requests in support of academics.

What you'll do:
- Assists in filling the duties of the supervisor when he is o annual or sick leave, etc.
- Functions as a team leader in relocation of offices, classrooms, and set-ups for special events by performing duties associated with a Campus Service Worker I position, ensuring departmental personnel are aware of schedules for moves. Trains new employees on proper techniques and operation of equipment, adjusting daily task assignments to meet changes in need and priorities, and informing supervisor of problem areas.
- Acts as an on-the-job trainer of other employees in performance of assigned tasks. Is a source of experience and expert guidance in the Labor department. Responsible for maintaining knowledge of methods, materials, tools and equipment to satisfactory levels.
- Is knowledgeable and experienced in setting up for special events such as Commencement, concerts, President's Office events, academic requests, registration, etc. Includes set-up of tents, staging, special platforms, bleachers, tables, chairs, etc.
- Provides daily reports on actual progress versus projected progress to Supervisor. Maintains the original scope of project to ensure project cost control. Informs Supervisor of needed discipline and performance problems. Ensures that work group processes all work requests, material requisitions, weekly reports, and invoices necessary to complete assignments according to Physical Plant operation.
- Functions as a team leader while performing duties associated with a Campus Service Worker position. Follows procedures and makes work assignments to those individuals assigned to the crew to ensure work is completed in a timely fashion ensuring proper quality and quantity. Inspects completed work assignments of the Campus Service Worker to ensure quality control. Ensures that proper safety procedures are used while performing job duties.
- Receives work orders. Interfaces with Work Control, Supervisor, Managers and requesting party to finalize needs and scope. Responsible for filling out work requests accurately as needed in completing job assignments. Communicates work schedules and goals to employees and customer, creating efficiency and a timely completion of assigned tasks.
- Provides continual inspection of assigned area to ensure assignments are completed on schedule.
- Relocates offices and classrooms within buildings and throughout campus by lifting, loading and unloading furniture, file cabinets, boxes, etc. onto hand-trucks, dollies, and box vans for transportation. May require removing desk components, doors, and shelves to ease in relocations. Moves, sets-up, rearranges, and erects tables, chairs, platforms, bleachers, tents, displays, etc. May assist in the design for special event set-ups. Reads floor plans and layouts for concerts, registration, commencement, and other special statewide University affiliated events. Drive box vans, forklifts, front loaders, small dump trucks and operate lift gates. Operates, maintains, and services equipment and tools that are used while performing moves, set-ups, sanitation services, and snow removal.
Operates motor vehicle (i.e. car, box van, pickup truck, fork lift, front loader, small dump truck to transport people, to deliver/receive surplus for inventory control. To deliver, receive, or remove surplus materials for shops and equipment throughout the campus and community and statewide. Unloads and stores supplies, rotating stock and equipment at various job sites. Establishes and maintains inventory of department throughout institutional buildings, warehouse, or stockroom on equipment, e.g. tables, chairs, tents, staging, platforms, etc.
Collects and properly disposes of trash and litter throughout institutional buildings and grounds, including cleaning of trash receptacles and assisting sanitation vehicle operators. Collects and properly stores hazardous materials, e.g. muriatic acid, propane, diesel fuel, anti-freeze, chlorine, alcohol, and sodium bi-carbonate.
- Removes snow from sidewalks, steps, roads and parking lots using hand tools, power brooms, and snowblowers. Spreads de-icers and limestone chips on all areas as needed. Must have the ability to operate one-ton trucks with plows and spreaders during winter snow removal. Removes graffiti from walls and sidewalks; performs all outside cleaning activities as required. Operates high-pressure washers, sandblasters, and other power equipment to complete these tasks. Operates blowers, walk-behind sweepers to clean and remove debris in maintaining the appearance of institutional grounds.
- Assists with landscape construction by; operating jackhammers and other related equipment to remove broken sidewalks; mixing, pouring, and spreading concrete, asphalt, gravel, and other materials; digs holes and trenches to assist in the repair or replacement of utility lies, irrigation and drainage systems; excavates and prepares grounds prior to initiation of construction projects.
- May be required to clean and maintain interior area's appearance as it relates to moves and relocation of furniture, office equipment, etc. Follows established safety procedures in the use of tools, specialized equipment and trucks, and hazardous materials; locks and unlocks buildings, offices, classrooms, and meeting rooms as directed by Supervisor. May be required to maintain and care for institutional grounds by mowing, seeding, and aerating lawns and turf, trimming and edging around trees, flower beds, buildings, and walkways; watering lawns, shrubs, and ornamental gardens during dry periods; collecting, removing and disposing of debris throughout the campus area. Must be able to provide support to academics, special events for WVU campus community, regional campuses, and throughout the state, which requires flexible hours and mandatory overtime.
- Must be able to respond to emergency situations and events, which include snow removal.
- Assembles/disassembles all furniture, work stations, stages, platforms, tents, portable flooring, hangs banners, signs and special displays.
Pay Grade: 10
Hours: 7a-3p High School diploma or GED required.
Qualifications
- High School diploma or GED required
- A minimum of one (1) year in the following:
- Directly related work experience including custodial and labor assignments with a commercial or industrial setting.
- Operating small dump truck, box van, forklifts, etc.
- Any equivalent combination of related education and/or experience will be considered
- All qualifications must be met by the time of employment
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Demonstrated knowledge of basic grounds keeping, labor, and custodial methods, procedures, and safety principles.
- Demonstrated ability to operate all related labor supporting equipment, basic grounds keeping equipment, and commercial custodial equipment.
- Ability to read and write in English and perform basic mathematical calculations.
- Ability to comprehend and follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to function as a team leader providing training to others and maintaining necessary records.
- Physical capability to perform duties of the position including long periods of standing and walking, bending, stooping, climbing, and lifting of heavy items weighing in excess of 100 pounds.
- Ability to perform tasks requiring frequent and prolonged exposure to extreme variations in temperatures including outdoor weather conditions and exposure to dust, fumes and chemicals.
- Ability to operate vehicles such as box vans, small dump trucks, recycling truck and garbage trucks including knowledge of safe riving procedures and WV traffic and safety regulations.
- Ability to maintain proper attendance and punctuality standards.
