Fire Inspector

Under limited supervision, the Part-Time Fire Inspector performs fire and life safety inspections, assists in fire investigations, supports EMS operations within certification levels (no firefighting), and aids in other fire department functions as needed. This position ensures compliance with fire codes, supports public safety initiatives, and provides technical expertise in fire prevention and life safety.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Conducts fire and life safety inspections of commercial and public buildings in accordance with local, state, and federal fire codes.
- Assists in fire investigations under the direction of the Fire Marshal.
- Investigates fire code complaints, issues citations, and makes court appearances as required.
- Conducts plan reviews and permit inspections as assigned.
- Supports public education initiatives, fire prevention programs, and outreach events.
- Assists EMS personnel as needed within the scope of certification.
- Maintains inspection records, investigation reports, and related documentation.
- Ensures fire lanes, fire hydrants, and fire department connections are properly maintained.
- Assists with administrative tasks, department logistics, and other fire prevention duties.
- Responds to inquiries from business owners, contractors, and the public regarding fire safety regulations.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
SCOPE OF SUPERVISION
- Works under limited supervision of the Fire Marshal and/or Fire Chief.
- This position does not supervise other employees.
- High School Diploma or GED (Required).
- Prior experience in fire prevention, fire inspections, or related field (Required).
LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
- Texas Commission on Fire Protection (TCFP)Fire Inspector I & II(Required).
- Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS)Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) or higher(Preferred).
- Valid Texas Class C Driver's License with a clean driving record (Required).
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT
- Work is performed both in indoor and outdoor environments.
- Must be able to stand, walk, and conduct inspections for extended periods.
- Climbing ladders, bending, kneeling, and moderate lifting (up to 50 lbs.) may be required.
- Exposure to extreme temperatures, hazardous conditions, and emergency situations may occur.
- Must be available for flexible scheduling, including occasional evening or weekend assignments.
- Local, state, and federal fire codes, including NFPA, IBC, and IFC standards.
- Fire prevention methods, fire safety regulations, and life safety principles.
- Fire investigation procedures and evidence collection.
- Building construction principles related to fire safety.
- Emergency medical procedures and patient care (within certification level).
Principles of effective communication and public interaction.
Conducting fire and life safety inspections.
- Investigating fire code violations and compiling accurate reports.
- Applying fire codes and ordinances to real-world scenarios.
- Communicating effectively both verbally and in writing.
- Using fire inspection software, reporting tools, and Microsoft Office applications.
- Working independently while maintaining professionalism and integrity.
