General Cleaner

BRIEF JOB SUMMARY: In accordance with the individual and collective needs of the ages of the population served by Collage Day School, the Maintenance Specialist maintain and protect our facilities. The external and internal appearance of a building reflects on the occupants. It is important for a Maintenance Specialist to be careful and thorough in working, cleaning and tidying the premises, as well as preventing vandalism. The role is focused on building upkeep. Critical features of this position are described under the headings below but are subject to change at the discretion of Collage Day School and its management. This job description reflects the designation of essential job functions but does not provide an all-inclusive list of duties that may be assigned.

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

Attitude:

• Greets student and parent with respectful and welcoming attitude
  • Articulates and interprets school philosophy

• Speaks in a tone of voice that relays respect for children and adults
  • Is welcoming and friendly to children and parents at all times

Cleaning Functions:

• Sweep, mop, vacuum, scrub, and refinish floors; clean, dust and polish furniture; wash windows and walls; clean restrooms; dispose of rubbish, change lights, etc.; make certain all areas of the building are kept in a clean, sanitary and orderly condition according to industry and/or district standards.

• Pick up litter within the schools and on school grounds.

• Applies cleaning chemicals according to established safety procedures.

• Adheres to safety measures for cleaning, lifting, moving, and operating equipment.

• Performs minor repair and maintenance as authorized by supervisor.

• Removes extraneous dirt/markings from interior and exterior vertical/horizontal surfaces (walls, doors, etc.).

• Advise supervisor on matters relating to mechanical equipment and/or building maintenance.

• Performs minor painting to walls, rails, playgrounds and other areas of the school.

• Keeps all equipment in a good state of repair and cleanliness.

Administrative Functions:

• Initiate maintenance service requests. Follows-through to assure that maintenance is performed in a timely manner.

• Maintains inventory and request cleaning supplies and materials needed to accomplish assigned tasks.

• Maintains awareness of energy conservation and make suggestions of methods and procedures to consider energy.

• Secures equipment and supplies and protects against pilferage, loss, theft, or abuse.

Safety and Security:

• Periodically inspects, or otherwise maintains awareness of, facility and equipment to detect and prevent injuries or damage.

• Secures school building to ensure proper building security at all times. Lock, secure and code out building at end of shift.

• Verifies that emergency equipment is maintained and repaired as need be.

• Assists in implementing emergency planning and response.

• Performs other duties as assigned.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

• Have great physical endurance to cover a large space

• A keen eye for detail and diligence.

• Attention to detail and conscientiousness

• Very good physical condition and strength

• Must be able to receive detailed information through oral communication

• Must be physically present at the assigned job site.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP:

• SUPERVISED BY: Director of Maintenance; other school officials

EDUCATION:
• High School Diploma or higher required

EXPERIENCE:

• Proven experience as custodian, janitor or in a similar role

• Knowledge of use and maintenance of industrial cleaning equipment and appliances

• Knowledge of safe disposal of chemical liquids and other hazardous components

• Familiarity with basic landscaping and handyman practices
