The Teacher Assistant, under the direction of the classroom teacher, child study team case manager or administrator, assists the teacher in the instructional and non-instructional activities of the class so as to provide the children with more direct supervision and instruction.
Teacher Assistants may be asked to participate in staff development, as assigned by the Director of Special Services.
Responsibilities include:
  • Prompting, cueing and redirecting student participation
  • Reinforcing of personal, social, behavioral, and academic learning goals;
  • Organizing and managing materials and activities; and
  • Implementation of teacher-designed follow-up and practice activities
Assignments:
As per N.J. Administrative Code for Special Education (N.J. 6A: 14), teacher assistants may:
  • Provide supplementary aides and services to a special education student or students placed in the general education class.
  • Provide support in Resource Center programs such as Pull-out Support or Replacement, depending on the group size.
  • Serve as a classroom aide in special class programs, depending on the group size.
  • Serve as an individual assistant for a special education student to assist with instruction, under the direction of the teacher, implement behavior plans, and any other responsibilities as needed by the individual student, as per the IEP.
Must possess 60 college credits or passing score on the Parapro Praxis
Prior experience working with child with special education needs preferred
Substitute Certificate preferred.
