The role – what you'll do
Barr is seeking a part-time environmental field technician to join our Jefferson City office and work 8–12 hours per week at a client facility in the Bixby, Missouri, area and potentially other client facilities in southeastern Missouri. In this role, you will support the Assessment and Remediation business unit and undertake challenging and progressive work on projects related to the investigation, evaluation, and remediation of contaminated sites. The person in this position will perform routine operations and maintenance for a closed mine tailings site. Work will include completing site inspections, monthly well gauging activities, documenting site conditions through field notes and summary reports, and coordinating with contractors, other consulting firms, the Barr project manager, and the client project manager. Work may also involve overseeing contractors and documenting construction work. In addition, work may also include collecting groundwater, surface water, or soil samples.
The ideal candidate for this role is a clear and confident communicator who works effectively both collaboratively and independently. They are adaptable, organized, and proactive, bringing strong professional judgment and a high level of attention to detail to dynamic field and office environments. They take ownership of their work, anticipate needs, and contribute thoughtfully to project planning and execution. They demonstrate reliability, safety awareness, and a commitment to continuous improvement. Above all, they value teamwork, quality, and integrity in delivering impactful environmental solutions.
Your impact – key responsibilities
- Technical knowledge: apply foundational environmental principles to plan and carry out site investigations; collect and document high-quality soil, groundwater, and surface water samples; operate and calibrate field instruments; and follow SOPs, QA/QC protocols, and health-and-safety plans. Compile, validate, and summarize field and laboratory results and assist with data interpretation.
- Project support: help coordinate field activities, including scheduling, logistics, and contractor oversight. Prepare equipment, track daily progress, and contribute to documentation of key milestones.
- Problem solving: contribute to the evaluation of site conditions and identification of potential solutions to environmental challenges. Learn how to apply regulatory knowledge and scientific reasoning to real-world scenarios.
- Communication: produce clear field notes, chain-of-custody and data summaries; draft report sections and emails for review; and provide concise status updates to project managers and stakeholders.
- Interpersonal savvy: effectively collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and clients to align technical work with project objectives while fostering strong, productive working relationships.
About the opportunity
- Compensation: anticipated range of $30–$36/hour. Compensation will vary based on relevant experience, education, skill level, and other compensable factors. Employees in this position may also be eligible for a discretionary cash bonus based on team and individual performance. This position is classified as non-exempt (hourly) under the Fair Labor Standards Act.
- Hybrid: a hybrid work arrangement may be considered for this position. A hybrid work arrangement refers to splitting time worked between a Barr office and a home office. This position is based out of Barr's Jefferson City, Missouri, office.
- Travel expectation: willingness to travel and periodically adjust personal schedule to meet project needs (including travel, primarily day trips) and 75% or more fieldwork expected; project needs will vary seasonally and over time.
- Work environment: job assignments may involve work on waste disposal sites and sites requiring the cleanup of hazardous materials. Participation in an OSHA-mandated medical surveillance program will be required. Safety training will be provided before being assigned to work on these sites. Applicants must be able to work in locations that feature the rough terrain typical of construction sites and to enter and work in facilities that include limited accessibility, moving machinery, and other conditions typical of industrial facilities.
Physical requirements for the role may include:
- Ability to conduct fieldwork in varying outdoor conditions (e.g., heat, cold, rain, uneven terrain).
- Must be able to lift and carry equipment and materials weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Capable of standing, walking, kneeling, or crouching for extended periods.
- Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) as required by site conditions.
- Ability to safely operate or work around environmental monitoring and sampling equipment.
About you – required core competencies
- Professional experience: over 10 years of professional experience demonstrating reliability, a commitment to safety and strong mechanical aptitude.
- Software: strong computer skills, including word processing and use of spreadsheets. Familiarity with the Microsoft Office Suite.
- Driver's license: possession of a current, valid driver's license and acceptable driving record.
- Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need for sponsorship by Barr, now or in the future
