Division School Psychologist and Behavior Specialist



Pay Grade: Assistant Principal/Psychologist Scale

Period of Employment: 11 Months FLSA Status: Exempt 

Supervised by and/or Reports to: Executive Director of Instruction and Professional Learning

General Responsibilities: Performs specialized psychologist work in an educational setting and works cooperatively as an interdisciplinary team member to provide services and to devise an appropriate service plan for students and their families of Colonial Beach Public Schools.

Essential Responsibilities: 



· Performs casework services with students/families to help resolve student's behavioral, learning, & social problems.

· Selects and administers age appropriate psychological tests, assessment methods, and materials in order to determine the needs of the student.

· Consults with teachers and other school personnel to obtain information regarding the reason for referral.

· Gathers background information on the student's psychological history by conducting behavioral observations, making home visits, conducting interviews, and reviewing school records.

· Interprets assessment results and compiles comprehensive psychological assessment reports that address the reason for referral and include appropriate recommendations for students Pre-K through 12 or program completion.

· Serves as a member of the interdisciplinary assessment team assigned to each school and works as a team member in making placement decisions, developing intervention plans, and planning programs to meet the special needs of children.

· Communicates case findings and recommendations to teachers and other school personnel as needed.

· Chairs or leads eligibility committee meetings and contributes to the development of Individualized Education Plan (IEP) as appropriate.

· Serves as a resource to teachers and staff regarding psychological services and the academic/psychological needs of students.

· Conferences with and provides information, support, and counseling to parents/guardians of students.

· Conducts in-service training and workshops for teachers and staff regarding mental health issues and proper procedures for the identification and referral of students.

· Organizes and conducts specialized programs to include parent training classes and student support activities.

· Conducts specialized individual and group counseling sessions to address specific emotional, social, and behavioral needs of students.

· Serves as a liaison between the student, home, school, private counseling facilities and community resources such as social services, court services, and family service agencies.

· Provides follow-up support and periodic re-evaluation services as necessary.

· Acts as a member of the school crisis team to provide intervention to students as necessary.

· Compiles monthly reports; maintains accurate case records; and completes necessary documentation for work completed on Medicaid eligible children.

· Models nondiscriminatory practices in all activities.

· Performs other duties as assigned by the Supervisor.



Requisite Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 



· Keeps abreast of developments and research in the field of school psychology.

· Must be knowledgeable and abide by the ethical standards of NASP. 

· Extensive knowledge of child and adolescent growth and development, both normal and abnormal, and of curriculum and instructional practices including behavior management are required.

· Highly developed counseling skills for crisis and non-crisis situations and a broad background in psychological/educational testing, test interpretation, and application to behavioral and instructional strategies are also required.

· Ability to communicate school system policies and programs to the general public, media, and government officials. 

· Ability to communicate skillfully, both orally and in writing, including preparing complex reports, making formal oral presentations, and participating fluently in meetings. 

· Serve as role model and recognize that they are in a position of public trust and are held to a high standard of personal and professional conduct.

Physical Requirements:



Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through the use of the telephone and personal contact as normally defined by the ability to see, read, talk, hear, handle or feel objects and controls. Physical capability to effectively use and operate various items of office related equipment, such as, but not limited to: a personal computer, calculator, copier, and fax machine. Some climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, and repetitive motions. Some heavy work requiring the exertion of 50 pounds of force occasionally to move objects may be required.
