Job Description:
A licensed Pharmacist responsible for safe, accurate dispensing of medications, medication therapy management (MTM), patient counseling, clinical support to prescribers and care teams, and compliance with federal/state pharmacy laws.
Key responsibilities / duties:
- Review, interpret, and accurately dispense prescriptions and medication orders; verify dosages, formularies, interactions and contraindications before release.
- Provide comprehensive patient counseling on drug purpose, dosing, side effects, storage, adherence and monitoring.
- Perform medication therapy management (MTM), clinical interventions, and drug utilization reviews; recommend therapy adjustments and communicate with prescribers.
- Administer immunizations and other authorized patient care services permitted under California scope (for pharmacists with appropriate training or Advanced Practice Pharmacist status).
- Maintain, control and reconcile controlled substances and inventory; order and manage pharmaceutical stock to ensure cost-effective, uninterrupted supply (common in county/hospital roles).
- Supervise and train pharmacy technicians, interns and support staff; ensure pharmacy workflow and opening/closing procedures run safely and efficiently.
- Ensure compliance with state and federal regulations (California Board of Pharmacy rules, DEA) and maintain required records and reporting.
- Participate in quality-improvement, medication safety, and antimicrobial stewardship initiatives (health-system roles).
Required qualifications:
- Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) from an ACPE-accredited program (or equivalent).
- Current, active California Pharmacist license (issued by the California State Board of Pharmacy).
- Federal controlled-substance (DEA) registration if handling-controlled substances.
- Experience: Minimum 3+ years of experience as a pharmacist is required.
Preferred / desirable:
- Pharmacy residency (PGY-1 or PGY-2) for clinical/hospital positions.
- Certification in immunization delivery, MTM, or ambulatory care; experience with electronic health records and clinical decision support.
- Advanced Practice Pharmacist (APh) credential (if applicable).
Skills & competencies:
- Strong clinical knowledge of pharmacotherapy, drug interactions and dosing adjustments.
- Excellent communication and patient-counseling skills.
- Attention to detail, high accuracy under time pressure, and sound professional judgment.
- Ability to supervise staff, manage operations, and work collaboratively within interdisciplinary teams.
