Controller

AMS Paving is seeking an experienced Controller to lead the day-to-day accounting and financial operations of our Fontana location. This role is critical to the success of the business and serves as the financial right hand to the General Manager, while also reporting directly to the Corporate Controller and CFO.

The ideal candidate will have deep experience in asphalt paving, maintenance, or construction accounting, with a strong command of job costing, WIP, retention, indirect cost allocations, and equipment allocations. This is a highly visible, hands-on role requiring strong technical accounting skills, operational awareness, and the ability to support multiple stakeholders with timely, accurate reporting.

What we're looking for:

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (required).
• 7+ years of accounting experience, with significant experience in construction, asphalt paving, or maintenance contracting.
• Demonstrated expertise in:
• Job costing and WIP accounting
• Retention accounting
• Indirect cost and equipment allocations
• Month-end close and reconciliations
• Prior experience managing AP, AR, and payroll teams.
• Strong Excel skills and experience with construction ERP/accounting systems.
• Highly organized, detail-oriented, and able to manage competing priorities.
• Comfortable working in a fast-paced, operationally focused environment.
• In-office availability in Fontana is required.

What you'll do:

• Financial Operations & Accounting
• Own the monthly close process, including journal entries, account reconciliations, accruals, and variance analysis.

Cash Management & Banking

• Perform daily bank reconciliations and monitor cash balances.
• Oversee cash flow forecasting and monitoring.
• Manage Positive Pay, ACH controls, wire activity, and fraud prevention.
• Review and monitor credit card activity, ensuring proper coding and compliance.

Reporting & Analysis

• Prepare and distribute weekly KPI reporting, including operational and financial metrics.
• Support ad-hoc reporting and analysis requests from the General Manager, Corporate Controller, CFO, and other stakeholders.
• Assist with budgeting, forecasting, and operational performance analysis.
• Provide financial insight to support job performance, margin improvement, and operational decision-making.

Leadership & Team Oversight

• Directly oversee Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, and Payroll staff.
• Ensure timely and accurate vendor payments, customer invoicing, collections, and payroll processing.
• Establish and enforce strong internal controls, policies, and procedures.
• Act as a finance business partner to operations and field leadership.

Corporate & Platform Integration

• Ensure compliance with corporate accounting policies and reporting standards.
• Support audits, lender reporting, and private-equity reporting requirements as needed.
• Participate in system improvements, ERP enhancements, and process standardization initiatives.
• Maintain accurate Work-In-Progress (WIP) schedules, percent-complete calculations, and revenue recognition.
• Track and reconcile retention receivable and payablebalances.
• Manage job costing, including direct costs, indirect cost allocations, and equipment allocation methodologies.
• Prepare and analyze monthly financial statements (P&L, balance sheet, job profitability).
