Summary

 

The Athletic Coach instructs athletes in fundamental skills, strategy, and physical training necessary for them to realize a degree of individual and team success; instructs and demonstrate behaviors that lead to socially acceptable character development, self-discipline, self-confidence, and pride of accomplishment in the student athletes; and improves knowledge, skills, and abilities of all through coaching clinics, observations, consultation, etc. The position conforms to and carries out all laws and all lawful rules, regulations, and policies that exist or may be enacted relative to Hillside School District employees as they relate to the area of assignment.
 

 

Essential Functions

  • Responsible for the supervision and safety of all players under their supervision.

  • Organizes daily practice routines.

  • Coach individual participants in the skill development necessary for the sport involved.

  • Develops individual and team strategies for improvement.

  • Provides training rules and any other unique regulations of the sport to each athlete who is
    considered a participant.  

  • Promotes good sportsmanship and serves as a role model for student athletes.

  • Serves as a mentor to each athlete to demonstrate and promote the development in student athletes of the character traits of trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship. 

  • Pays attention to a student athlete's grades and conduct.

  • Enforces all rules and regulations.

  • Determines discipline, delineates procedures concerning due process when the enforcement of
    discipline is necessary, and contact parents when a student is in danger of being dropped or becoming ineligible. 

  • Directs student managers, assistants, and statisticians. 

  • Assists in the necessary preparation to hold scheduled sport events or practices and adheres to
    scheduled facility times. 

  • Coordinates program schedule with maintenance and school employees. 

  • Assists the athletic director in scheduling, providing transportation and requirements for tournament and special sport events. 

  • Assist in organizing, distributing, and collecting all related uniforms and equipment associated with the program.

  • Is present at all practices, games, and while traveling, provides assistance, guidance, and
    safeguards for each participant. 

  • Provides proper safeguards for maintenance and protection of assigned equipment sites. 

  • Initiates programs and policies concerning injuries, medical attention, and emergencies. 

  • Completes paperwork on all significant athletic injuries on proper forms and submits to the athletic office within 24 hours. 

 

 

 

FINANCE AND EQUIPMENT: 

  • Participates in the budgeting function with the athletic director by establishing requirements for the next season.

  • Recommends equipment guidelines as to type, style, color, or technical specifications. 

  • Is responsible for operating within budget appropriations. 

  • Is accountable for all equipment and notifies the Athletic Director of any equipment lost or not returned. 

  • Arranges for issuing, storing, and reconditioning of equipment and submits annual inventory and current records concerning the same. 

  • Properly marks and identifies all equipment before issuing or storing. 

  • Monitors equipment rooms and coaches' offices, authorizes who may enter, issue or requisition
    equipment. 

  • Permits the athletes to only be in authorized areas of the building at appropriate times. 

  • Examines locker rooms before and after practices and games, checking on the general cleanliness of the facility.

  • Responsible for cleanliness and maintenance of specific sport equipment. 

  • Instills in each player a respect for equipment and school property, its care and proper use.

 

 

 

PUBLIC RELATIONS: 

  • Organizes parents, coaches, players, and guests for preseason meetings. 

  • Promotes the sport within the school by recruiting athletes who are not in other sports
    program and promotes the sport outside the school through news media, little league programs, or in any other feasible manner. 

  • Responsible for the quality, effectiveness, and validity of any oral or written release to local media. 

  • Responsible for maintaining good public relations with news media, booster club, parents, officials, volunteers, and fans. 

 

 

 

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Understands the proper administrative line of command and refers all requests or grievances through proper channels.

  • Is aware of all public/staff/departmental meetings that require attendance.

  • Establish the fundamental philosophy, skills, and techniques to be taught by staff. 

  • Design conferences, clinics, and staff meetings to ensure staff awareness of the overall program. 

  • Trains and informs staff regarding appropriate coaching techniques and policy.

  • Encourages professional growth by encouraging clinic attendance according to local clinic policy. 

  • Delegates specific duties, supervises implementation, and at season's end, analyzes staff
    effectiveness and evaluates all assistants. 

  • Maintains discipline, adjusts grievances, and works to increase morale and cooperation. 

  • Performs other related duties that the athletic director/principal may assign. 

 

 

 

Knowledge, Ability, Skill

 

Knowledge: Knowledge of the rules and regulations of the sport involved, the technical/skills aspects of the sport, and at the same time, must continue to examine new theories and procedures pertinent to the field. Have a thorough knowledge of all the athletic policies approved by the HIllside District 93 School Board.

 

 

 

Ability: Demonstrated ability to organize and supervise a total sport program; to serve as an appropriate role model for student athletes through his/her instructions and actions; to maintain a positive learning environment; to motivate and inspire student athletes; to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends; to exercise common sense and good judgment.

 

 

 

Skills: Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; Strong organizational and time management skills; Skill in coaching the technical and skill building aspects of the sport involved.

 

 

 

Supervision 

 

Received: Works under the direction of the Athletic Director, who provides overall objectives and final evaluation in conjunction with the school principal. 

 

Exercised: The head coach may advise, coordinate, and support a staff of assistant coaches and middle school coaches in conjunction with the athletic director and respective principal.

 

 

 

Continuation and Dismissal

 

All coaching positions will be for one season only. The athletic director and principal will make re-appointment proposals for the following season. The superintendent will make the recommendation for re-appointment and forward it to the School Board for approval. 

 

 

 

An Athletic Coach is an at will position and may be dismissed from his/her duties at any time for unprofessional conduct, violation of School Board policies, violation of expectations and responsibilities, and/or any unethical behavior that places students in danger or places the District in an unprofessional light, or for any reason determined at the sole discretion of the District.

Code of Ethical Conduct
Coaches are required to adhere to all school board policies relative to codes of conduct, behavior, and expectations.  Additionally, coaches must adhere to all sportsmanship standards established in School Board policies and/or by Salt Creek Valley Conference. Violating any code of conduct may result in immediate termination and/or dismissal.

The employee is regularly required to see, talk, listen, and hear to use hands to manipulate, handle, or feel. The employee is required to use tools and equipment associated with the position, computers, computer accessories, telephone, copier, FAX machine, and other such equipment; to reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, or crouch. Employee must occasionally move equipment and/or supplies. Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Depending on the assignment, lifting up to 25 pounds may be required. The position includes other unusual aspects such as extended time, risk of injury factor, and due process predicaments.
