Job Summary:

Responsible for providing support during obstetric and gynecological surgical procedures, ensuring optimal patient case, safety and surgical outcomes. This role involves working closely with OB/GYN surgeons and healthcare professionals to prepare the surgical environment and assist in surgical interventions to deliver high-quality perioperative care.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Serve as a scrub person during operative and other invasive procedures, ensuring a sterile and efficient environment of care.
  • Assist OB/GYN surgeons during surgical procedures, including cesarean sections, hysterectomies, laparoscopic surgeries, and other gynecological procedures.
  • Prepare operating rooms by ensuring proper equipment, instruments, and supplies are available and sterile.
  • Collaborate with the surgical team to position patients, maintain a sterile field, and provide surgical instruments and supplies as needed during procedures.
  • Anticipate the needs of the surgeon, assisting with tissue handling, hemostasis, suturing, and wound closure to facilitate efficient surgeries.
  • Assist the surgeon is successful use of the DaVinci robot.
  • Maintain accurate surgical counts of instruments, sponges, and supplies to ensure patient safety and compliance with protocols.
  • Perform opening or closing procedures including suturing as directed by licensed surgeon.
  • Assist with post-procedure cleaning and preparation of the operating room.
  • Alert surgeon to safety or procedural concerns before, during, and/or after case.
  • Represent all Premier Women's Health of Minnesota division staff and facilities in a professional manner
  • Assist during in-office procedures (IOPs) in clinic when not assigned to ASC or hospital cases.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Ability Requirements:

  • Ability to think critically, solve problems; exercise initiative, judgment and decision-making.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work effectively in a fast-paced surgical environment.
  • In-depth knowledge of OB/GYN surgical procedures, sterile techniques, and surgical instrumentation.
  • Proficiency in assisting with both open and minimally invasive surgical techniques.
  • Good attention to detail and adherence to surgical safety standards and protocols.

Work and Education Qualifications:

Education option 1:

  • Completion of a CAAHEP-accredited surgical assist program required for this option.
  • Hold a valid certification from the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA), the National Commission for the Certification of Surgical Assistants (NCCSA) or an equivalent, required for this option.

Education option 2:

  • Completion of a CAAHEP-accredited surgical technology/technologist program, required for this option.
  • Hold a valid certification from the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) or an equivalent, required for this option.
  • Willingness to obtain advanced surgical assisting training including but not limited to- suturing/tissue manipulation, upon hire.

Experience for both options:

  • 3+ years experience working as a surgical assistant/technologist, required.
  • Surgical experience in obstetrics and gynecology, strongly preferred.
  • 2+ years of experience with DaVinci robot surgical cases, required
  • Demonstrates competency in suturing/tissue manipulation skills, preferred. (Required to start obtaining within first year if skillset not in place upon hire).

  • Strength and Mobility: The ability to lift and position patients, as well as surgical equipment and supplies, is important. This might require physical strength and agility to assist in moving patients on operating tables and adjusting surgical equipment
  • Stress Management: Surgical environments can be high-pressure and fast-paced. The ability to remain calm under pressure, manage stress, and focus on the tasks at hand is critical.
  • Visual Acuity: Good vision and depth perception are essential for accurately handling surgical instruments, suturing, and maintaining a sterile field
