The State Preservation Board (SPB) was established for the purpose of preserving, maintaining, and restoring theState Capitol and the 1857 General Land Office, which houses the Capitol Visitors Center. Since that time, Agency operations have expanded to include care of the Governor's Mansion, operating the Bullock Texas State History Museum, Texas State Cemetery, Capitol Mall and three Capitol Complex legislative office buildings. Position Summary: This position reports to the Housekeeping Supervisor with additional oversight from the Housekeeping & Grounds Manager. This position performs advanced (senior-level) custodial work, under limited supervision, with considerable latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. The Custodian IV will serves as a team lead and will assist the Housekeeping Supervisor with administrative tasks including assigning work, completing purchase orders, estimating materials and supplies for projects, and scheduling and training staff. Daily duties include providing excellent customer service and ensuring the highest cleanliness standards are met. Custodians are responsible for general cleaning and upkeep of buildings, offices, restrooms and other assigned areas. They are required to consistently use sound judgment and display a strong sense of self-reliance and self-motivation. Custodians work as part of a focused team with a service company approach. Must portray and maintain a friendly, professional, positive demeanor in all interactions with employees, occupants, visitors, event holders, and the public. This position is not sedentary in nature and requires considerable physical exertion and mobility, the ability to lift, bend, move and operate heavy equipment, and remain standing and walking for extended periods of time; organization and multitasking abilities. Custodians may be exposed to inclement or harsh weather conditions in the performance of duties. Performs all other duties as assigned. References will be required to verify experience. Must be able to work extended hours and must be able to pass a thorough criminal background check to be considered. *Work hours are based on the Agency's 365 day-per-year schedule and may include weekends, evenings and holidays, including on short notice.

· Performs general housekeeping, custodial duties and cleanup in assigned area(s) throughout Capitol Complex and other SPB maintained buildings.
· Regularly performs visual inspections, and quality assurance spot-checks of assigned areas; perform cleaning and general housekeeping tasks, maintaining custodial equipment, requesting and restocking supplies. Performs thorough cleaning and related activities uniquely related to the Capitol and other designated SPB buildings.
· Assists in scheduling and completing special projects. Maintains records of time spent and supplies used for special projects.
· May oversee and assign the work of others including contractor employees.
· May provide training for others in safety and cleaning techniques.
· Uses a computer to monitor and respond to email, create purchase orders and make timesheet entries.
· Maintains custodial equipment; requests and restocks supplies.
· Will occasionally require working to clean and maintain high areas of the buildings; accessed by climbing stairs, ladders, scaffolding and a mechanical lift. Duties will include working from elevated positions.
· Actively monitors building and occupant security and safety, effectively intervenes to eliminate or reduce Capitol Complex safety and security hazards. Adheres to safe hazardous chemical handling, use and disposal standards.
· Remains abreast and complies with all applicable safety rules, regulations, standards and emergency procedures and established industry safety and security techniques. Plans and manages work with safety and security in mind. Continuously assesses safety conditions to ensure individual and workplace safety and safety of visitors and staff. Promotes visitor safety and building security.
· Maintains a professional, respectful, and service-oriented focus when interacting with other employees, visitors and the general public, promotes public confidence in the agency.
· Regular attendance is an essential job duty for all SPB position.
· Performs other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
· Knowledge and skill in the use of custodial materials, chemicals and the operation of custodial equipment.
· Ability to work from elevated positions, using stairs, ladders, scaffolding and mechanical lifts.
· The ability to perform all required physically demanding tasks, including disinfecting, cleaning, sweeping, mopping, stocking, lifting up to 40 pounds, climbing, stretching, reaching, bending, kneeling, squatting, stooping, and extensive periods of walking throughout the building to complete housekeeping duties within established time frames.
· Ability to move from building to building to work as assigned. This is not a sedentary position and requires extensive periods of walking throughout the building and occasionally, the parking garage.
· May be required to drive a golf cart around complex to transport equipment or supplies.
· Must be able to handle animal trapping devices when needed.
· Must have the ability to do light general maintenance duties such as unclogging toilets, turning off water to faucets, work on custodial equipment.
· Ability to remain focused on work priorities, and also be responsive to customer requests and concerns.
· Ability to use sound judgment and maintain a professional, respectful, and service-oriented focus when interacting with other employees, building occupants, visitors and the public.
· Ability and willingness to maintain a positive, flexible attitude regarding the variety of assignments and accepts assignments willingly.
· Ability to actively monitor building and occupant security and safety, effectively intervenes to eliminate or reduce Capitol Complex safety and security hazards.
· Skill in promptly responding to emergencies and actively work to contain the emergency situation, to ensure personal safety and the safety of building occupants, visitors and staff.
· Ability to handle and manage exposure to unusual elements, such as toxic chemicals, hazardous materials, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, and loud noises. Ability to work in inclement or harsh weather conditions, including extreme heat.
· Ability to adhere to safe handling, use and disposal standards of hazardous chemicals.
· Ability to respond to after hour's calls needing immediate attention and to emergency situations throughout the Capitol Complex or for any state buildings managed by the SPB.
· Effective communication skills and responsive to customer requests and concerns.
· Ability to pass a thorough criminal background check.
Required Experience:
· Three (3) years of custodian experience or one year of experience as a custodial lead or supervisor.
· Customer service experience; must be able to work with limited supervision, resourceful.
· Must be able to operate a golf cart or agency truck if needed.
· Basic computer skills in a Windows environment.
· English communication skills; verbal and written.
Preferred Education and Experience:
· High School diploma or equivalent.
· Additional years of custodial lead or supervisory experience working in a public building.
· Valid driver's license with a clear driving record.
· Experience estimating the types and amounts of materials needed for major projects.
· Experience scheduling and routine record keeping.
· Experience training others in the hazards and safety issues involved in the custodial trade.
· Experience with equipment and techniques used in cleaning historical artifacts and wood surfaces.
· Bi-lingual fluency in Spanish and English.
