Position Summary:

The Director of the Ambulatory Surgery Center partners closely with the Vice President of Surgical and Diagnostic Integration to advance clinical excellence and operational performance across outpatient ambulatory surgical and endoscopy services. This leadership role drives patient-centered care delivery improvements through innovative, evidence-based practices and fosters a collaborative interdisciplinary culture. The Director champions nursing leadership development, promotes shared governance models, and ensures a positive work environment that supports staff engagement, retention, and decision-making at the point of care.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

Strategic Leadership & Collaboration

  • Collaborate with senior leadership to develop and implement strategic goals aligned with community needs and healthcare trends impacting ambulatory surgery services.
  • Lead continuous improvement initiatives to enhance patient outcomes, operational efficiency, and service quality.
  • Foster partnerships with internal stakeholders—including nursing, medical staff, and administrative teams—and external entities such as professional organizations, regulatory bodies, and regional health networks.

Clinical & Operational Excellence

  • Oversee ambulatory surgery and endoscopy services to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements (AAAHC, CMS, etc.) and adherence to evidence-based clinical standards.
  • Utilize system thinking and data-driven approaches to redesign workflows, optimize resource allocation, and implement innovative care delivery models.
  • Maintain accountability for patient safety, quality benchmarks, and performance metrics, reporting regularly to senior leadership.

Workforce Development & Culture

  • Mentor and develop nursing leaders and staff to cultivate clinical expertise, leadership capabilities, and professional growth.
  • Promote a diverse, equitable, and inclusive workplace culture that values collaboration, accountability, and respect.
  • Implement succession planning and talent development strategies to build future leadership capacity. Financial & Resource Management
  • Lead budget planning and fiscal management for ambulatory surgical services, ensuring efficient use of resources while maintaining high-quality patient care.
  • Educate clinical teams on financial stewardship, payer mix implications, and reimbursement strategies relevant to ambulatory care.
  • Oversee capital expenditures and staffing models to align with organizational priorities and patient volume trends.

Communication & Advocacy

  • Represent ambulatory surgical nursing leadership at organizational, state, and regional forums.
  • Advocate for nursing's role in clinical and operational decision-making, ensuring frontline perspectives inform policy and program development.
  • Promote active engagement in professional nursing, surgical technology, endoscopy, sterile processing and ambulatory surgery organizations and continuing education.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Oversee ambulatory surgical and endoscopy clinical operations to ensure adherence to regulatory compliance (AAAHC, CMS, State, etc.).
  • Lead development, review, and updating of policies and procedures based on current evidence and regulatory requirements.
  • Implement system-wide workflow redesign and care delivery models to improve patient experience and operational efficiency.
  • Analyze financial statements and manage budgetary processes, ensuring appropriate resource allocation and financial accountability.
  • Collaborate with nursing leadership and human resources on recruitment, hiring, onboarding, and performance management of direct reports.
  • Monitor and report quality metrics and patient safety indicators to senior leadership regularly.
  • Cultivate partnerships with professional nursing and ambulatory surgery organizations to enhance the department's visibility and influence.
  • Support a culture of equity, diversity, and inclusion by addressing inappropriate behaviors and promoting respectful work environments.
  • Facilitate staff education on financial implications of care delivery and regulatory changes impacting reimbursement.
  • Lead succession planning efforts to identify and develop future nursing leaders within the ambulatory services.

Position Qualifications:

Education: Graduate of an NLN approved nursing program required. Bachelor's degree or higher in Nursing required. Master's degree in nursing or another related field (MBA, MA, MHA) required.

License: Current New Hampshire or multistate licensure as Registered Nurse

Experience: Seven to ten years of progressive experience in Nursing Leadership and Administration required.

Knowledge: Demonstrated Leadership in Ambulatory Surgery, Ambulatory Surgery Management or Surgical Services Leadership required.
