Position Summary
The Nurse Manager provides strategic and clinical leadership across multiple outpatient clinic locations and clinical specialties. The Nurse Manager is a key operational and clinical leader responsible for managing the nursing and clinical support teams across all outpatient clinics. This role ensures standardized workflows, supports regulatory readiness, develops high-performing care team capabilities, and leads strategic initiatives to improve care delivery and operational efficiency. The Nurse Manager works in partnership with the senior leadership team, physicians, and clinic supervisors to deliver safe, high-quality, and patient-centered care.
Key Responsibilities
1. Clinical Operations
- Develop and implement standardized clinical workflows to streamline patient throughput and ensure consistency in patient care, nursing responsibilities, and rooming protocols
- Standardize procedures for vital sign collection, medication & vaccine administration, procedural workflows, in-clinic testing, room turnover, patient triage, and pre/post visit planning, etc.
- Support and implement pharmacy processes for management of clinic medications, pharmaceutical samples, patient assistance medications, and floor stock medications
- Develop, maintain, and revise nursing competency checklists, protocols, and onboarding materials
- As appropriate, lead daily huddles and weekly clinic flow reviews to identify bottlenecks and implement real-time solutions
- Travel to and manage staff at multiple clinic locations
- Provide hands-on support to clinical staff team when necessary
- Establish and coordinate clinic emergency response plan
2. Workflow Optimization & Process Improvement
- Conduct regular workflow analyses using data and staff feedback to reduce inefficiencies and enhance patient and staff satisfaction
- Utilize process improvement methodologies to evaluate current processes and implement new or improved processes
- Evaluate and realign staff responsibilities for RNs, LPNs, and MAs to ensure effective team-based care and optimize scope of practice
3. Staff Supervision
- Direct supervision of the Nursing Supervisor, RNs, LPNs, and MAs
- Assist Health Services Manager with physician timecard approvals
- Promote a high-performance, collaborative, and respectful workplace culture
- Manage recruitment, onboarding, scheduling, and performance evaluations
- Support professional development and lead training/cross-training for clinical staff
- In collaboration with HR, lead corrective action processes and manage grievances when necessary
- Review, analyze, and abide by applicable collective bargaining agreements impacting clinical staff
4. Quality, Compliance & Patient Safety
- Ensure adherence to collective bargaining agreements, OSHA, CDC, IDPH, HIPAA, and Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC) standards
- Oversee implementation and monitoring of infection control policies, including room cleanliness, hand hygiene, equipment disinfection, vaccine storage protocols, etc.
- Maintain readiness for regulatory inspections and audits and lead the clinical response to deficiencies
- Collect, analyze, and act on quality and safety data (e.g., patient incidents, missed documentation, care gaps)
- Develop, track and report key performance indicators for nursing
5. Strategy
- Collaborate with leadership to execute clinic-wide strategic initiatives, including care delivery redesign, process improvements, and risk reduction
- Partner with the senior leadership team, physicians, and supervisors to streamline clinic operations
- Serve as a change agent for organizational goals, helping frontline teams adapt to new systems or processes
6. Resource & Supply Oversight
- Manage medical equipment and clinic supply inventory and function
- Monitor staff use of PPE, point-of-care testing, etc. to promote stewardship of use
Required Qualifications
- Current RN Illinois license
- Bachelor's degree in Nursing (BSN) required; Master's degree in Nursing, Public Health, or Healthcare Administration preferred
- Minimum 5 years of clinical experience, with at least 3 years of leadership experience in an ambulatory or outpatient setting
- Minimum 3 years of supervisory or nurse management experience
- Proficiency in EMR systems
- Strong knowledge of outpatient care regulations and nursing scopes of practice
- Excellent communication and team building skills
Preferred Experience
- Familiarity with PDSA, Six Sigma, or other performance improvement methodologies
- Experience in unionized environments
