Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) Subject Matter Expert (SME)

Location: Remote

**Candidates must be able to work for any US employer without sponsorship**

Our client is a growing lending organization focused on rental property investment financing, specializing in Debt-Service Coverage Ratio (DSCR) loans, committed to building a strong foundation for risk oversight and governance to support sustainable growth and regulatory compliance as we continue to scale.

We are seeking an experienced and highly skilled Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) Subject Matter Expert to design, develop, and implement our organization's first formal ERM program from the ground up.

Position Summary:

As the ERM SME, you will be responsible for building a comprehensive and sustainable Enterprise Risk Management framework tailored to our business model. This role is a greenfield opportunity — you will be the architect, builder, and driver of the ERM function with no existing internal infrastructure or team support. Success in this position requires expert-level knowledge of ERM principles, strong leadership, exceptional independence, and the ability to effectively communicate risk strategies and priorities across the organization.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and build an enterprise-wide risk management ERM framework aligned with regulatory expectations, industry's best practices, and company-specific risk exposures (particularly in DSCR lending).
  • Conduct a comprehensive risk assessment across all business units to identify, categorize, and prioritize current and emerging risks.
  • Develop risk policies, procedures, and controls that support risk identification, mitigation, and monitoring.
  • Establish a risk governance structure including roles, responsibilities, and reporting mechanisms to executive leadership.
  • Create documentation, workflows, templates, and reporting tools to support risk management practices.
  • Lead the development of Key Risk Indicators (KRIs), Risk and Control Self-Assessments (RCSAs), and risk appetite statements.
  • Design processes for risk event/incident reporting, escalation, and remediation tracking.
  • Build and implement risk education and awareness materials to foster a strong risk culture across the company.
  • Maintain a pulse on emerging regulatory changes and industry trends relevant to the risk landscape of private lending and DSCR-focused institutions.

Qualifications:

  • 10+ years of progressive experience in enterprise risk management, ideally in financial services, lending, or real estate investment environments.
  • Proven track record of building ERM programs from scratch in environments with minimal to no existing infrastructure.
  • Experience in DSCR loan underwriting, servicing, or portfolio management
  • Experience in managing loan servicing oversight for loans that are securitized and managed by loan servicers
  • Deep understanding of risk domains, including credit, operational, compliance, market, and strategic risks.
  • Comfortable operating in a start-up or high-growth environment with lean resources.
  • Hands-on approach with the ability to document policies and procedures without reliance on support staff.
  • Familiarity with regulatory frameworks applicable to non-bank lenders and real estate investment financing.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills with the ability to translate complex risk concepts for executive stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, self-manage priorities, and lead through influence without direct authority.
  • A bachelor's degree is required; an advanced degree or certifications (e.g., CRMA, FRM, CERA, CPA) are preferred.
