Position Overview:The Sidewalk Snow Removal and Salt/Shovel Crew is responsible for ensuring the safe and accessible passage of pedestrians during winter weather conditions. This essential team works diligently to clear sidewalks, pathways, and other designated areas of snow and ice buildup, as well as applying salt or other de-icing agents to prevent slips and falls.

Key Responsibilities:

Snow Removal:Monitor weather forecasts to anticipate snowfall and freezing conditions.

Promptly respond to snowfall events by assembling the crew and allocating tasks.

Utilize snow blowers, shovels, and other equipment to clear snow from sidewalks, walkways, staircases, and entrances.

Ensure that all designated areas are thoroughly cleared to provide safe passage for pedestrians.

De-Icing:Apply salt or other de-icing agents to treated surfaces to prevent ice formation.

Follow proper application guidelines to ensure effective and economical use of de-icing materials.

Pay special attention to areas prone to ice accumulation, such as inclines, shaded spots, and high-traffic areas.

Equipment Maintenance:Inspect and maintain snow removal equipment regularly, ensuring that they are in proper working condition.

Report any equipment issues or malfunctions to the supervisor for prompt repairs.

Clean and store equipment properly after each use to prolong its lifespan.

Safety and Communication:

  • Prioritize safety for both crew members and pedestrians during snow removal operations.
  • Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) to minimize the risk of injury.
  • Communicate effectively with team members to coordinate tasks and ensure efficient snow removal.

Emergency Response:

  • Be prepared to respond to emergency situations, such as heavy snowfall or ice storms, that may require additional effort or a change in work strategy.

Qualifications:

  • Physical fitness and ability to perform strenuous manual labor in cold and potentially challenging conditions.
  • Familiarity with snow removal equipment, such as snow blowers, shovels, and de-icing spreaders.
  • Basic knowledge of safe handling and application of de-icing materials.
  • Strong teamwork and communication skills to coordinate tasks effectively.
  • Attention to detail and a commitment to maintaining high-quality work standards.
  • Ability to follow instructions, adhere to safety protocols, and work independently or as part of a team.
