About the Academies of Math and Science

The Academies of Math and Science (AMS) is a network of high-performing, college-preparatory K–8 charter schools founded on the belief that all children, regardless of background or circumstance, are capable of achieving academic excellence. Serving primarily low-income communities, AMS has a proven track record of success: for over a decade, our schools have ranked among the top-performing charter schools in Arizona.

At AMS, we don't just teach academics—we prepare students for college, careers, and life. Our mission-driven team works relentlessly to equip students with the skills, habits, and confidence to succeed and to positively impact their communities.

Position Summary

As a Special Education Paraprofessional at AMS, you will play a vital role in supporting teachers and ensuring that all students—particularly those with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) or special learning needs—have the tools and supports necessary to thrive. Working side by side with highly skilled educators, you will provide individualized and small-group interventions, assist with behavior management, and help foster a positive, inclusive, and structured learning environment.

This role is ideal for someone passionate about special education, eager to work directly with students who need additional support, and considering a long-term career in teaching, special education, or school leadership.

Key Responsibilities

  • Supervise and support with campus-wide activities such as lunch, recess, arrival, and dismissal to ensure student safety
  • Support lead and special education teachers in delivering instruction by assisting with lesson activities, classroom management, and transitions.
  • Work one-on-one or in small groups with students with disabilities to reinforce skills, reteach concepts, and support individualized education plans (IEPs).
  • Assist in implementing behavior intervention plans (BIPs) and provide social-emotional support to students as needed.
  • Substitute for lead teachers when necessary to ensure learning continues uninterrupted.
  • Prepare instructional materials, set up classroom resources, and assist with documentation and data collection related to student progress.
  • Collaborate with teachers, administrators, and support staff to meet the academic, behavioral, and social-emotional needs of students.
  • Maintain a safe, structured, and inclusive classroom environment that promotes engagement, respect, and independence.
  • Model professionalism, patience, and high expectations in every interaction with students, staff, and families.

Qualifications & Competencies

Required:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent and successful completion of the paraprofessional exam, OR Associate's degree (or higher).
  • Previous Special Education Paraprofessional experience (required).
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a valid Level One IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card.

Preferred:

  • Bilingual in English and Spanish.

Ideal Candidate Attributes:

  • Passion for working with students in diverse, underserved communities and with special learning needs.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with adults and children.
  • Patience, adaptability, and the ability to remain calm and supportive in challenging situations.
  • Reliability, consistency, and a strong sense of responsibility.
  • Team-oriented mindset and eagerness to learn and grow.

Why Work at AMS?

  • Competitive pay with opportunities for bonus compensation.
  • Comprehensive benefits package including medical, dental, vision, life insurance, disability coverage, and retirement with employer contributions.
  • Paid time off (PTO) and supportive work-life balance policies.
  • Ongoing professional development including training, coaching, and professional learning communities.
  • Collaborative, mission-driven culture with supportive leaders and dedicated colleagues.
  • Career growth and advancement opportunities as AMS continues to expand across Arizona and beyond.
  • The opportunity to make a lasting difference in the lives of students who may not otherwise have access to a high-quality education.
