Veterinary Technician-Overnight
The Emergency Pet Hospital of Glendora is a small animal emergency and urgent care hospital providing immediate care for sick and injured pets. Our caseload includes trauma, respiratory distress, toxin ingestions, GI emergencies, endocrine crises, and other urgent and critical conditions.
In every case, we offer not just medical support, but a compassionate hand and a listening ear to both our patients and the pet parents who trust us in some of their hardest moments.
We believe our patients get the best care when our team feels safe and supported. We maintain a respectful, encouraging environment and look for team members who bring a positive, solutions-focused attitude to work every day.
We are looking for an experienced overnight emergency/urgent care veterinary technician who is confident working with minimal supervision, has strong anesthesia skills, and is committed to providing calm, compassionate care to both patients and their families.
Key Responsibilities
Overnight Patient Care & Monitoring
- Provide continuous monitoring and nursing care for hospitalized and ICU patients throughout the night
- Recognize and respond quickly to changes in patient status, including potential decompensation or emergency situations
- Set up and monitor fluid therapy, CRIs, and oxygen therapy (including ICU/oxygen cage use, if applicable)
- Maintain accurate medical records and treatment sheets overnight
Triage & Emergency Response
- Perform initial triage on walk-in emergencies and direct transfers from neighboring general practice hospitals for continued care during overnight hours
- Prioritize cases based on severity and communicate clearly with the veterinarian
- Obtain accurate and quick patient histories from clients, even in stressful or emotional situations
Anesthesia & Surgery Support
- Induce, monitor, and recover patients for emergency or urgent procedures performed overnight (for example, foreign body, pyometra, C-section)
- Set up and operate anesthetic monitoring equipment (ECG, SpO2, blood pressure, ETCO2, temperature) and document anesthetic parameters
- Use strong anesthesia knowledge to recognize early signs of anesthetic complications or potential decompensation and promptly communicate concerns to the veterinarian
- Assist with emergency procedures such as CPR/CPCR, wound care, bandaging, and basic stabilization
- Maintain sterile surgical technique when assisting with procedures and preparing surgical suites, packs, and instruments
Medication Management
- Accurately fill take-home medications for discharge, including correct dosing, labeling, and instructions
- Be aware of common drug interactions and contraindications, especially in hospitalized pets receiving multiple IV injections, CRIs, and oral medications, and promptly alert the veterinarian to any concerns
Client Communication & Morning Discharges
- Provide clear, comforting updates to clients who call to check on their hospitalized pets overnight
- Communicate patient status with empathy and compassion, acknowledging the stress of emergency situations
- Prepare and assist with morning discharges, including going-home instructions or transfers to another ER or specialty clinic
- Ensure smooth handoff of cases to the daytime team
Hospital Support
- Maintain a clean, organized, and well-stocked treatment and ICU area
- Follow all safety, infection control, and animal handling protocols
- Assist with proper use and basic maintenance checks of medical equipment
Diagnostics
- Obtain high-quality digital radiographs, including trauma and orthopedic views
- Operate IDEXX and Abaxis in-house diagnostic machines for laboratory testing and diagnostic support
- Run CBC, chemistry, electrolytes, SNAP tests, urinalysis, and other in-house diagnostics
- Assist with ultrasound, blood pressure, EKG, and other monitoring equipment
Qualifications
Experience
- Two or more years of experience working as a veterinary technician or veterinary assistant in emergency, urgent care, or critical care (credentialed technicians—RVT, LVT, CVT—are a plus but not required).
Technical Skills
- Strong hands-on technical ability, including blood draws, IV catheter placement, in-house lab testing, taking and positioning for radiographs, safe animal restraint, surgical preparation, emergency support, and professional client communication.
- Advanced comfort with anesthesia: able to independently monitor anesthetic patients, recognize early anesthetic complications or potential crashes, and communicate promptly with the veterinarian.
- Competent with basic pharmacy tasks, including calculating doses, filling take-home medications, and understanding common medication interactions in ER/ICU patients.
- Familiarity with Pulse practice management software for charting, invoicing, and medical record management is a big plus.
Work Style & Soft Skills
- Able to work confidently and safely with little to no direct supervision during overnight shifts
- Able to juggle multiple tasks, stay organized and efficient in a busy environment, and remain calm and adaptable when priorities change quickly
- Brings a positive, team-oriented, solutions-focused mindset to each shift
- Demonstrates strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills, quickly recognizing what emergency care a patient needs based on their presentation
- Communicates with clients in a calm, comforting, and professional manner, especially during late-night check-in calls
Preferred Experience
- Bilingual communication is a plus
- Prior work in overnight emergency, specialty, or critical care settings is also preferred
Physical Requirements
- Must be at least 18 years old
- Capable of lifting 40+ lbs
- Comfortable standing and walking for long periods during 10-hour overnight shifts
