The Director of Teaching and Learning serves as the academic leader responsible for advancing high-quality teaching and learning across all grade levels. This role ensures a coherent and rigorous K–12 instructional program through effective curriculum design, professional development, data-informed decision-making, and instructional leadership. The Director partners closely with the Executive Director, Principals, and instructional staff to foster a culture of continuous improvement and excellence in student achievement.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
A. Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment (90%)
1. Curriculum Leadership and Coherence
- Lead a continuous, cyclical review process of all K–12 curriculum to ensure vertical and horizontal alignment with Minnesota Academic Standards, Classical education, and SCPA goals.
- Oversee curriculum adoption processes, including vendor evaluations and teacher pilot programs
- Ensure all content areas incorporate literacy, numeracy, and critical thinking integration across grade levels.
- Maintain a digital curriculum repository and ensure instructional staff have access to current guides, pacing calendars, and resource maps.
- Collaborate with Principals to ensure curriculum modifications are data-driven
- Collaborate with Curriculum and Instruction team in the implementation, reporting, and compliance of state and federal academic programs
2. Instructional Strategy and Pedagogical Support
- Research, develop, and implement evidence-based instructional frameworks
- Establish a schoolwide instructional model that promotes student-centered engagement, inquiry, and is centered in classical education
- Observe classrooms, provide targeted feedback, and model best practices to teachers and instructional leaders.
- Partner with Principals to design and monitor school improvement plans grounded in data from walkthroughs, observations, and standardized assessments.
- Collaborate with the special education director and EL teacher to ensure inclusive practices are embedded into Tier I core instruction.
3. Assessment, Data, and Accountability
- Oversee the development and administration of the district-wide assessment plan, ensuring a balanced system of formative, interim, and summative assessments.
- Lead the analysis of local and state testing data to identify achievement gaps, growth trends, and areas for intervention.
- Support teachers in using data teams to set measurable goals and adjust instruction.
- Collaborate with the Executive Director and Principals to present annual achievement reports to the Board of Directors and authorizer.
- Maintain oversight of assessment vendor contracts, testing logistics, and state reporting compliance (e.g., MCA, ACCESS, DIBELS, IXL).
- CEU/Relicensure reporting, tracking, and data entry.
4. K-12 Alignment
- Design and deliver a comprehensive staff learning framework aligned with charter goals, board priorities, and the strategic plan
- Co-Lead new teacher induction and mentoring programs, including co-planning and co-leading new teacher orientation.
- Support leadership development through instructional coaching, administrator retreats, and training on supervision and evaluation systems.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of academic initiatives through feedback surveys, student achievement data, and classroom practice changes.
B. Teaching and Updating about Procedures of Emergency Operations Plan, including reunification (10%)
- Review and Update EOP: Conduct an annual, comprehensive review and update of the school's Multi-Hazard Emergency Operations Procedure (EOP) to ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations and best practices.
- Integrate Protocols: Revise and integrate specific emergency protocols (e.g., severe weather, fire, active threat, medical emergencies) into the EOP based on lessons learned from drills and any changes in facility layout or external threats.
- Drill Planning and Execution: Partner with the Crisis Team to schedule, execute, and evaluate required drills.
- Training and Communication: Develop and deliver training to all staff and students, collect feedback from drills, and update plans accordingly.
Qualifications
Education:
- Master's degree in Education, Curriculum & Instruction, Educational Leadership, or related field required.
- Specialist or Doctorate degree preferred.
Experience:
- Valid MN teaching license
- Minimum of 5 years of successful teaching experience.
- Minimum of 3 years in instructional leadership (e.g., instructional coach, principal, program director).
- Demonstrate commitment to continued professional development
- Demonstrate effective leadership skills, communication, coaching, and support to staff
- Working knowledge of classical pedagogy methods and SCPA philosophy
- Ability to coordinate with the administrative team and Curriculum & Instruction Committee
- Experience with implementing professional staff development plans and the ability to train other staff members
- Demonstrate ability to facilitate group discussions to enhance collegial relationships and productive teamwork
