Job Title: Senior Enterprise Network Engineer/Sr Network Engineer

Position Summary

The Senior Network Engineer will play a critical role in designing, implementing, and maintaining enterprise-network solutions for CONFIRE's mission-critical fire, EMS, and communications infrastructure. This role demands an experienced engineer who can ensure network reliability, performance, scalability, and security in a fast-paced public safety environment. You will partner with technical and operations teams, external vendors, and stakeholders to ensure the network backbone supports dispatch, GIS, radio, and IT systems.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the architecture, design, deployment, and optimization of LAN/WAN, SD-WAN, cloud connectivity (Azure/AWS), and network infrastructure supporting dispatch centers, radio systems, and IT services.
  • Manage and maintain network devices (routers, switches, firewalls, load balancers, VPN gateways) and support network monitoring, performance tuning, and capacity planning.
  • Develop and enforce network security best practices, segmentation, firewalls, intrusion detection/prevention, and VPN/access controls.
  • Collaborate with radio/communications, GIS, IT-systems, and vendor partners to integrate network connectivity with dispatch, GIS, and communications systems.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve complex network issues to minimize downtime for 24/7 mission-critical systems.
  • Document network architecture, configurations, change logs, and produce diagrams and reports for management.
  • Proactively plan for network upgrades, migrations, and redundancy (including failover/disaster-recovery) to support business continuity.
  • Lead vendor engagements and contract oversight for network hardware/software/licensing, ensuring vendor deliverables meet performance, quality, and SLAs.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant regulations, standards, and certifications (e.g., NIST, public-safety communications, GIS network requirements).
  • Serve as a subject matter expert and mentor for junior network staff and cross-team collaboration.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field – OR equivalent experience.
  • 7+ years of experience in enterprise network engineering or network architecture roles.
  • Proven track record of designing and implementing network solutions (LAN, WAN, SD-WAN, cloud connectivity) in complex environments.
  • Strong vendor management experience with network hardware and solutions.
  • Deep experience with Cisco (CCNP/CCIE preferred), Palo Alto, Fortinet, or equivalent network/security platforms.
  • Experience with Azure or AWS networking, including cloud transit gateways, VPCs, VPNs.
  • Proficient in network design documentation (Visio, diagrams), network monitoring tools, performance tuning, capacity planning.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; ability to partner with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Strong analytical mindset and ability to work independently as well as part of a team in a hybrid environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Public-safety or emergency-communications network experience (911, dispatch centers, radio systems).
  • Familiarity with GIS network integration, radio data networks, and mission-critical communications infrastructure.
  • Experience with network automation (Ansible, Python), network virtualization, and SDN.
  • Relevant certifications: Cisco CCIE / CCNP, Azure Networking Engineer, AWS Network Specialty, CISSP, ACSP.
  • Experience working in a JPA (Joint Powers Authority) or governmental network environment.

Job Types: Contract, Temp-to-hire

Pay: $ $70.00 per hour

Expected hours: 40 – 50 per week
