Job SummaryLead and manage a team of attorneys, paralegals, and other legal professionals in an identified practice group. Serve as the primary subject matter expert and senior leader of their practice group who sets organizational strategies to support the mission of the Institution and the Office of the General Counsel. Proactively represent the Office of the General Counsel in the campus and surrounding community as a solutions provider. Provide input to the General Counsel on key priorities, resource allocation, and strategic goals. Provide advice, counsel and training regarding legal requirements, best practices, and strategies for managing risk. Provide leadership and serve as a key advisor in protecting the legal interest of the Institute and ensuring its operations are within the scope of established law and policy. Responsible for setting employee goals, assessing performance, providing feedback and career development opportunities, and making pay recommendations.This position will interact on a consistent basis with: Institute executive management and department heads, research and academic faculty, cooperative organizations, Institute staff, opposing counsel, and representatives of various regulatory agencies.
ResponsibilitiesJob Duty 1 - Proactively identify legal issues and provide counsel to senior administration in multiple specialized areas in the law relating to higher education. Serve as the primary subject-matter expert of their practice group and proactively communicate with and educate Institute client groups and teams on changes in legal compliance, policies and practices.
Job Duty 2- Determine needs for campus-wide education and training.
Job Duty 3 - Conduct presentations on legal issues and processes to Institute management and staff.
Job Duty 4 - Perform other duties as assigned
Job Duty 5 - Proactively and positively engage with stakeholders to elevate and promote the mission and services provided by the Office of the General Counsel; work collaboratively on coordinated projects with overlapping areas of responsibility and expertise
Job Duty 6 - Manage and provide leadership and guidance to their staff attorneys, paralegals and legal assistants. Mentor and attend to the professional development of attorneys and other staff.
Job Duty 7- Provide input to the General Counsel on key priorities, resource allocation, and strategic goals.
Job Duty 8 - Independently interact with external legal counsel and attorneys and legal staff within the State Attorney General's Office and Board of Regents on legal questions and issues.
Job Duty 9 - Prepare and negotiate key documents, contracts, policies, and various other documents.
Job Duty 10- Serve on any committees, as assigned, to provide legal input and guidance.
Required QualificationsEducational Requirements
Juris Doctorate from an accredited school
Other Required Qualifications
Member of the Georgia Bar or ability to become licensed to practice law in Georgia within twelve months of hire.

Ten years of job related experience

This job requires professionally advanced knowledge of the law, especially as applied within a higher education and research oriented environment required for complete latitude for independent judgement. Scope of leadership to work without supervision and to execute the mission and objectives of the General Counsel. Requires mentoring and leadership skills. The ability to communicate effectively with tact and diplomacy. Use of office and legal related computer applications is required. The person in this position works collaboratively with many offices on campus and must have a deep understanding of the organizational culture and decision-making processes of the Institute. The person in this position will be expected to work at the highest professional level with integrity, judgment and attention to detail and work as a leader within their team.
