Lab Support Technician, First Shift, Outreach Operations Department
UC Health is hiring a full-time Lab Support Technician for the outreach operations department for first shift at University of Cincinnati Medical Center.
The Lab Support Technician performs all activities within the Patient Service Centers of the Outreach Laboratory Service including: registration of patients in Horizaon; collection of blood and other specimens; performance of required pre-analytic processing; client profile set-up and maintenance; client services and problem-solving; and other support functions to ensure Center is ready to receive and care for patients on a daily basis.

- Receives orders and reviews patient demographics, including insurance information, using LastWord, Centricity, or patient-provided details.
- Completes registration and enters orders into Horizon according to established protocols.
- Performs ABN checks for Medicare patients; presents ABN forms, explains options, and assists with completion as needed.
- Answers phone calls promptly and courteously, identifying oneself and using correct medical terminology.
- Handles phone requests efficiently with minimal call transfers.
- Completes all required departmental logs and documentation.
- Reviews lab requisitions for completeness, including ABN, ICD9 codes, and patient demographics.
- Resolves identified problems appropriately and in a timely manner.
- Performs filing duties.
- Participates in the orientation and training of new hires in Outreach Laboratory Services.
- Prepares the service center for daily operations: opens and secures the center, sets up draw sites, cleans and prepares for the next shift, and completes required paperwork.
- Facilitates billing by ensuring all necessary information and forms are completed.
- Coordinates workflow to ensure timely handling of specimens, paperwork, and documentation.
- Demonstrates excellent customer service with patients and clients.
- Resolves patient or client issues appropriately; escalates to the correct resource when necessary.
- Troubleshoots problems effectively.
- Develops and maintains physician and office profiles, including preferences and updated contact information.
- Initiates profiles for new physicians or offices.
- Investigates and clarifies ambiguous test orders with the ordering physician or main lab.
- Performs venipunctures and other specimen collections as needed.
- Conducts point-of-care (POC) testing when required.
- Follows established protocols for specimen collection and patient identification.
- Adheres to safety policies and procedures during specimen collection, transportation, and processing.
- Accounts for all work performed; completes logs to ensure sample integrity and minimize lost specimens.
- Reviews policies and procedures in a timely manner.
- Completes mandatory continuing education modules and technical competencies within established timeframes without reminders.
Education and Experience Requirements:
High school diploma or GED required; completion of formal phlebotomy program or equivalent is preferred.
Phlebotomy experience is preferred.
Ability to read and comprehend written information required. Ability to effectively and efficiently perform a variety of job duties in a stressful, fast paced environment is required. Technology and computer skills; must have knowledge of or be able to learn several different information systems (Centricity, LastWord, Horizon, Epic).
Phlebotomy certification is preferred.
