We are dedicated to curating and delivering the most compelling pop culture related entertainment, news, award show coverage, chart updates, statistics and more, to our followers. We're a leading Gen Z-focused news brand delivering fast, and sharp takes on everything from viral celebrity moments to breaking political headlines. Our goal is to make the news feel relevant, clear, and very online.
The Role
We're looking for a News Writer & Editorial Contributor who lives and breathes pop culture with the ability to deliver word articles on pop culture, politics, music, film/TV, and is eager to take the current formula of news reporting and optimize it for Generation Z.
Additionally, you will collaborate with and ideate on strategies for web and newsletter editorial and contribute to marketing conversations surrounding these platforms.
You'll write concise, clear, engaging news stories that reflect what's currently happening in our news cycle. We want someone who can identify ways to develop web/newsletter platforms and break down trending stories while providing the right context for our audience.
What You'll Do
Contribute to weekly editorial and marketing meetings with ideas for editorial
Prepare articles based on demand for current news cycle across pop culture, entertainment, current events, and more
Stay on top of breaking news and trending topics
Translate complex or developing stories into content Gen Z readers actually want to read
Understand Pop Base's voice and contribute to ideas across web editorial
Collaborate with editors, strategists, and team to continuously shape and strengthen our presence across web-based platforms and newsletter
Learn our brand inside and out: not just the tone, but the values and the audience
What You Bring
A sharp eye for sourcing content for what's relevant and interesting right now
An excitement for where media is headed, and strong interest in steering managerial conversation around editorial
Strong writing skills: you know how to write clean, accurate news with proper structure, flow, and attribution
Strong understanding of politics and how Gen Z interacts with these issues
Can-do attitude with a drive to collect quotes, identify sources, and find unique information
Familiarity with AP Style
A solid understanding of journalistic tone and internet culture
Experience writing for digital media or fast-paced news cycles
Ability to adapt your voice and format for a Gen Z audience
Ability to contribute ideas to meetings and prioritize communication while working quickly
A love for pop culture, and genuine curiosity about what else is happening in the world
Bonus Points If You Have
Experience with SEO
Drive to find/pinpoint sources for quotes and exclusives
Familiarity with CMS platforms and independent publishing
Examples of news-first writing (and newsletter writing if applicable)
Love for generating ideas and startup culture
Drive to learn new skills & can-do attitude
