Electrical Transmission Engineer

Location:

Option for 5x8-hour shifts or 4x9-hour shifts + 8 hours every other Friday

Project Overview:

Join our Fortune 300 utility client on their cutting-edge initiative related to Electric Transmission known as the
Data Center Load Curtailment Program
This program was developed in response to the rapid growth of data centers, which has placed increasing stress on the electric transmission system. The goal is to maintain reliable service by proactively managing load curtailment through a system called
CAPFLEX
.

CAPFLEX monitors the
N-1 secure transmission limit
of constrained sub-systems and triggers load reduction events when aggregate demand approaches critical thresholds. The program is structured around four collaborative workstreams:
Operations, Project Management, Technology, and Forecasting
.

Position Summary:

As an
Electrical Transmission
Engineer
focused on the
Forecasting Workstream
, you will play a key role in predicting future load conditions and supporting real-time decision-making for curtailment events. You will work with a highly collaborative team of four engineers, each owning a core workstream and serving as secondary support for others.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Forecasting & Monitoring:
  • Develop and maintain 48-hour and 6-hour look-ahead load forecasts, with updates every 10 minutes.
  • Use forecasts to determine the need for curtailment events.
  • Support the development and automation of load curtailment control signals from EMS to DMS and customer equipment.
  • System Analysis & Engineering:
  • Perform power system analysis with a focus on N-1 contingency planning.
  • Support engineering assessments and technical specifications for hardware/software systems monitoring real-time transmission limits.
  • Survey customer equipment and design control hand-offs between DMS and customer systems.
  • Process & Compliance:
  • Develop and implement operating procedures and alert systems for curtailment events.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory policies in all technical designs and implementations.
  • Collaboration & Support:
  • Provide 24x7 technical support on a rotational basis.
  • Support training for both Dominion and non-Dominion customers.
  • Engage in industry forums (IEEE, CIGRE, NATF, SEE) to stay current on demand-side management trends.

Required Qualifications:

  • Education:
    Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Electrical preferred); Master's = 1 year experience, Ph.D. = 5 years experience
  • Experience:
    3+ years in utility, power systems, or related fields
  • Power system analysis and N-1 contingency planning
  • Proficiency in Python for software development, data analysis and automation

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in utility operations and electric transmission
  • Strong data analytics skills (data structuring and formatting)
  • Exposure to software development practices
  • Familiarity with tools similar to PSS/E (future use), ANODE (in-house forecast tool), and TARA
  • Experience with EMS, DMS, or DSSE (demand side selection engine) systems
