The Position
The Vice President (VP) is a senior enterprise and Medical & Scientific Affairs (MSA) people leader accountable for leading a diverse team of professionals and delivering an overall medical strategy for designated disease area(s) across multiple franchise portfolios. This role is instrumental in guiding a team of people leaders leading medical strategy leaders and field professionals.
The VP is accountable for alignment across a diverse network of internal cross-functional US and global stakeholders (including marketing/sales, communications, regulatory/compliance, clinical development, access/government affairs) to define and communicate strategic vision and goals. Externally, the VP cultivates scientific relationships with laboratory and clinical experts, professional and patient societies and guideline associations to understand medical needs and enable evidence-based use of Roche Diagnostics solutions, ultimately ensuring the right patients have access to the right test at the right time. This role focuses on bringing diagnostic and health solutions to patients in the US, but may also provide expertise and input that will refine global clinical development strategies, trial designs and regulatory submissions.
This role is part of the MSA leadership team, reporting directly to the Chief Medical Officer, and will be responsible for leading department- and organization-wide initiatives that shape MSA/enterprise culture, vision and strategy and contribute to efforts that build MSA capabilities. As a people leader of leaders, this role has extensive focus on coaching, mentoring, and developing future organization leaders and managing resource/capability needs balancing short- and long-term needs.
Key Roles & Responsibilities:
People Leadership
- Leadership Development: Identify and cultivate future people leaders within the MSA department and broader Roche organization. Contribute to enterprise-level leadership development programs and offerings.
- Coaching and Development: Provide continuous coaching and mentorship to direct reports, offering ongoing performance feedback and actively driving development plans to enhance individual impact and support career progression. Proactively identify and cultivate future leaders within the Medical & Scientific Affairs (MSA) department and the broader Roche organization
- Resource Planning and Allocation: Strategically and efficiently allocate MSA human resources within and across portfolios, prioritizing areas with the highest impact. Be accountable for comprehensive succession planning for critical roles and leadership positions
- Training & Capability Building: Identify needs and lead/support training and development initiatives to continuously grow and enhance skills and capabilities across the MSA department
- Culture: Nurture and champion culture of high-performance, accountability, inclusivity, and innovation within direct report team, broader MSA department and RDC enterprise.
Medical & Scientific Strategy & Portfolio Leadership:
- Strategic Prioritization: Within assigned disease area(s)' portfolio, define, communicate, and ensure alignment of US scientific priorities, ensuring alignment with global and cross-functional stakeholders. Across enterprise portfolios, make trade-offs and prioritization decisions to optimize outcomes for Roche, patients and customers
- Strategic Planning: Oversee the strategic development of comprehensive integrated strategic plans that address key challenges and opportunities within the US diagnostic laboratory and clinical landscape for assigned portfolio/disease area(s) and associated field plans.
- Tactical Execution: Oversee the execution of tactics related to Evidence Generation (e.g. investigator-initiated studies, research collaborations), Education (e.g. CME/CE, webinars, symposia, internal straining) , External Engagement (e.g. advisory boards, guidelines, scientific sponsorships) and Field Interactions
- Pipeline/Product Planning: Provide expert insights and critical US stakeholder input to global development teams for new product planning and evaluation of pipeline opportunities.
- Budget Management: Demonstrate strong financial stewardship and effectively manage assigned discretionary and travel & expense budgets, while maintaining enterprise lens beyond assigned portfolio.
External Partnerships
- Expert Engagement: Establish and nurture scientific relationships with key external experts and professional societies to gather critical insights to inform medical and scientific strategy.
Who You Are:
- The minimum education, knowledge, experience, skills and attributes required to perform the essential functions of this job
- Previous people management experience with demonstrated ability to mentor and develop emerging leaders required
- MD or PhD or other healthcare professional/advanced scientific degree
- Extensive / 10+ years of medical affairs or cross-functional strategy/leadership experience require
Preferred Requirements:
- Inspirational Leadership & Alignment: Proven ability to inspire, motivate, and align cross-functional teams to strategically address opportunities within a matrixed organization. Previous formal people leadership of 5+ years preferred.
- Diverse Medical & Scientific Affairs Experiences: Strongly prefer candidates with previous experience across a variety of Medical & Scientific Affairs leadership roles including strategy, field, and/or operations.
- Industry experience : Valuable experience includes prior knowledge and experience with in vitro diagnostics (IVDs) and/or pharmaceuticals in industry, R&D, healthcare/clinical laboratory setting
- Clinical Expertise: Clinical or industry experience in cardiometabolism or neurology is strongly preferred
- Cross-Functional Leadership: Experience in leadership roles in cross-functional industry roles, such as marketing, research & development, or alliance management is considered an asset.
- Established External Relationships: Preferred candidates will have established relationships with a diverse range of key external stakeholders, experts and professional associations in preferred disease areas. Demonstrated ability to drive collaborative initiatives and drive shared strategic objectives.
- Change Leadership: Previous experience leading major department and/or organizational change initiatives from design to sustainable operationalization
- Exceptional Communication Skills: Demonstrated excellence in both written and oral communication, with the ability to skillfully adjust messaging and content to meet the needs of diverse audiences.
- Ability to navigate ambiguity and decision-making: Demonstrated ability to navigate and lead through change and ambiguity, effectively adapting strategies and approaches in dynamic environments. The expected salary range for this position is $304,045 - $375,585 based on the primary location of Indianapolis, IN. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications and other job-related factors permitted by law. A discretionary annual bonus may be available based on individual and Company performance, as well as participation in a long-term incentive program.
