Overview

Google's Global Affairs team is seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Legal Specialist (Trade Compliance) to provide leave coverage within the Trade Legal Team. This role will focus on customs, trade compliance, and regulatory matters across North America. The ideal candidate will demonstrate deep knowledge of customs laws and procedures, strong analytical and communication skills, and the ability to deliver practical legal guidance across complex business environments.

Key Responsibilities

  • Advise on customs laws, regulations, and procedures in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
  • Support business operations with customs classification, valuation, origin determination, and other import/export compliance issues.
  • Assist with customs audits, investigations, and representation before customs authorities.
  • Develop and implement trade compliance policies, procedures, and internal controls.
  • Monitor and interpret regulatory changes in customs and trade laws across North America.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with Supply Chain, Logistics, Sales, and Legal teams to ensure compliance with all trade regulations.
  • Advise on free trade agreement utilization and qualification.
  • Contribute to broader Legal Department initiatives, including document management, contract reviews, and due diligence projects.
  • Improve processes by creating and refining agreement templates, policies, and operational metrics.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements

  • 8+ years of legal experience within a law firm, government agency, or in-house legal department.
  • Proven expertise in customs and trade compliance (classification, valuation, and origin determination).
  • Strong legal writing, research, and investigative capabilities.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • Exceptional organizational and project management abilities.

  • Demonstrated relationship-building and influencing capabilities across teams.

Preferred Attributes

  • Experience managing outside counsel, budgets, and alternative fee arrangements.
  • Familiarity with Google's operational systems or other large tech environments.
  • Ability to drive process improvements and identify automation opportunities.
  • Strategic mindset with a solution-oriented approach to legal challenges.
