AUTOMOTIVE/HEAVY TRUCK TECHNICIAN

Hourly Wage: $28.49

DEFINITION: Under general supervision, performs work of moderate difficulty in the skilled repair and maintenance of a variety of heavy trucks, cars, and other construction and specialized automotive and heavy truck equipment; and performs related work as required.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

1. Performs a variety of repairs and maintenance work including mechanical, electrical, diagnostics, fabrication, and hydraulic systems. There are several types of equipment that this will be required on.

2. Performs engine repairs, tune-ups, and inspections.

3. Works on transmissions, starters, alternators, axles, bearings, brakes, bodies, mufflers, springs, motor mounts, kingpins, and all other automotive and/or heavy truck systems.

4. Uses a variety of repair tools such as cutting equipment, acetylene torches, hoists, lifts and other tools.

5. May act as a supervisor or lead mechanic under the direction of the superintendent.

6. May make service calls on stalled or damaged vehicles.

7. Prepares simple reports on repairs and vehicle availability.

8. Keep simple maintenance records.

9. Writes work orders, time reports.

10. Figure charges for parts, labor, and overhead.

11. Responsible for job daily assignments including completing all required work orders, performing general labor, and insuring that assigned job site has been cleaned and left without safety hazards.

12. May participate in snow removal operations of City streets, crosswalks, and parking lots including spreading salt and sand as required.

13. Maintains tools and equipment in good working order.

14. Assists in training auto/heavy truck mechanics.

15. Performs related work as required.

DESIRABLE KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

Knowledge of the maintenance and repair of various types of automotive and or heavy truck equipment; of mechanical, electrical and hydraulic systems; of machine assembly; and of simple report writing and record keeping.

Working skill in maintaining and repairing engines, transmission systems, electrical systems, hydraulic systems, brake and steering systems, drive train systems, suspension systems and in understanding automotive and or heavy truck problems and deciding on proper response to same; in using hand and power tools, and in diagnosing and analyzing automotive and heavy truck needs.

SUGGESTED TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

Completion of a formal vocational or apprenticeship program in automotive and/or heavy truck equipment maintenance and repair; and three (3) years of skilled level experience in an auto and/or heavy truck repair shop; or any equivalent combination of training and experience.

WORKING CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Work involves frequent walking, standing, and driving; as well as lifting and carrying of heavy objects (over 50 pounds). The majority of the work is conducted in a garage setting or outside and may involve regular exposure to adverse conditions.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Possession of a valid Illinois Driver's License at time of hire.

Ability to obtain a Class B Illinois Commercial Driver's License within six months of hire.

Ability to obtain an OSHA approved forklift operator license within 6 months of hire.

Ability to work well with the general public.

Residency Requirement:

Temporary Modification to Residency Requirement effective November 15, 2021: all newly hired employees shall live anywhere within Winnebago County or anywhere within fifteen (15) miles of Rockford City Hall within six (6) months of the completion of their introductory period.

Effective June 1, 2018, all newly hired employees, including newly hired Department Heads, shall live within the municipal boundaries of City of Rockford within six (6) months of their completion of their introductory period.

Classified employees hired after January 1, 1984, may live anywhere in Winnebago County or anywhere within an area fifteen (15) miles from the Public Safety Building within six (6) months of their date of completion of probation. Employees hired prior to January 1, 1984, shall be subject to their conditions of employment in effect at that time.
