The Process Safety Engineer will play a critical role in preventing accidents and ensuring the safe operation of industrial processes. Their expertise helps organizations comply with safety regulations, protect employees, and minimize environmental impacts. By implementing effective safety measures, they contribute significantly to the overall success and sustainability of industrial operations. The Process Safety Engineer is responsible for identifying and mitigating risks associated with hazardous materials and operations, in compliance with regulatory standards and internal safety policies. This role focuses on the safe design, operation, and maintenance of chemical and manufacturing processes.

This position is based in Lexington, South Carolina, with occasional travel to our Maryland Heights, MO office.

Essential Functions:

  • Identify and analyze potential hazards associated with manufacturing processes and develop strategies to mitigate risks;
  • Design and implement safety systems and protocols to ensure compliance with safety regulations and standards;
  • Conduct qualitative and quantitative assessments, including HAZOP (Hazard and Operability Study) and other risk analysis techniques;
  • Organize and deliver training sessions on process safety management and incident investigation to ensure staff are knowledgeable about safety practices;
  • Work closely with other engineers and technical staff to provide support for major projects, ensuring that safety standards are met throughout the project lifecycle;
  • Assist in investigating process safety incidents and developing action plans to address identified gaps in safety practices;
  • Develop innovative solutions to complex safety challenges;
  • Collaborate with operations, engineering, and EHS teams to implement risk mitigation strategies;
  • Lead incident investigations and root cause analyses related to process safety events;
  • Support the design and review of safety systems (e.g., relief devices, interlocks, alarms);
  • Perform routine safety audits and inspect facilities, machinery, and safety equipment to identify and correct potential hazards, and to ensure safety regulation compliance;
  • Perform weekly and monthly inspections to include: fire extinguishers, emergency exits, AED/First Aid, electrical panes, chemical labeling, lift signage, and more;
  • Conduct safety training and compliance tracking for HSE requirements for SC and MO;
  • Manage online HSE data recordkeeping for SC and MO;
  • Develop, review, and implement safety/security policies, procedures and emergency operations plans in accordance with the Safety Director for SC and MO facilities;
  • Identify best practices and lead continuous improvement initiative to reduce work process risks, raise safety awareness and improve safe work practices;
  • Oversee hazardous waste, stormwater management, and other environmental aspects;
  • Domestic travel to other company locations ;
  • Other duties as assigned;

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering (industrial, chemical, mechanical, safety or related fields preferred) is required; however, 5 years of relevant safety experience may be accepted in place of a degree;
  • 2 years of safety experience;
  • OSHA 30-hour certification - preferred;
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbally and written for training and reporting purposes;
  • Self-motivated with strong time management, organization and planning skills;
  • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills to evaluate risks and enhance safety protocols;
  • Advanced Excel skills required;

  • Ability to stand, walk and sit for more than 7 hours per day;

  • Ability to consistently, bend, lift and pull supplies and materials up to 30 pounds without assistance.
