Job Title: Call Center Technician (Engineering Technician I)

Location: Burke, VA

Duration: 12 Weeks

Pay Rate: $17.00/hour

Position Overview

We are seeking a Call Center Technician (Engineering Technician I) to provide professional, responsive support for public utility operations. This role serves as a central point of contact for residents, businesses, and government agencies regarding sanitary sewer and stormwater emergencies, maintenance requests, and service inquiries.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide high-quality customer service in a professional and courteous manner
• Answer, respond to, refer, or transfer phone calls, emails, and other communications related to sewer and stormwater emergencies and maintenance requests
• Use GIS applications to research utility locations and ownership to support investigations by field crews
• Investigate, record, create, update, and close service requests and work orders in an asset management system
• Maintain and update boards, contractor details, staff availability, and logbooks on a regular basis
• Monitor pumping station alarms via SCADA and related monitoring systems and relay alarm information to appropriate personnel
• Log field staff entry and exit from pumping stations during business hours
• Dispatch inspectors and crews to emergency sites using electronic communication tools and document all response details
• Maintain knowledge of environmental regulations, agency practices, policies, internal resources, and online systems to provide accurate information
• Support regulatory compliance reporting related to sanitary sewer overflows (SSOs) and backup incidents

Preferred Skills

• Experience or knowledge of wastewater and/or stormwater systems
• 1–2 years of experience supporting a utility, field agency, or technical operations team
• Experience using communication systems to dispatch personnel and respond to emergencies
• Basic experience using Tax Map Grids
• Familiarity with asset management systems for work orders and maintenance history
• Basic experience using GIS applications
• Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook

Required Experience

• Any combination of education, training, and experience equivalent to high school graduation or GED
• At least one year of engineering or technical support experience

Preferred Experience

• Availability to work 20–32 hours per week during weekday business hours (7:00 AM – 4:30 PM) during training
• Post-training availability for weekend or overnight shifts (7:00 AM – 7:00 PM or 7:00 PM – 7:00 AM)

Education Requirements

• Required: High school diploma or GED
• Preferred: One year of post-secondary vocational training or completion of one year toward an applied science associate degree

Physical Requirements

• Ability to communicate verbally and in writing; operate computers and communication systems
• Ability to sit for extended periods during 12-hour shifts
• Ability to walk, stoop, bend, reach, and secure facilities as required
• Ability to respond onsite to alarms, dispatch crews, and open security gates during emergencies
• Ability to work nights, weekends, holidays, and extended shifts as required
• Physically and mentally capable of using required personal protective equipment (PPE) in indoor and outdoor environments
