Master Control Operator Supervisor

Job Overview:
We are seeking a proactive and skilled Master Control Supervisor to oversee all functions within the Master Control environment. The Supervisor will be responsible for managing the day-to-day operations, ensuring the proper staffing and coverage of live events, and providing leadership and guidance to the Master Control Operators. The ideal candidate will have a strong technical background, excellent leadership skills, and a keen eye for detail to ensure seamless live broadcast operations.
General Duties/Responsibilities:
- Manage Staffing and Scheduling: Oversee the master control operator staffing schedule to ensure the appropriate coverage is available to maintain operational continuity for all live events. Identify and recommend strategies for optimal staffing efficiency to effectively balance departmental workload and performance requirements.
- Coordinate Assignments: Responsible for the daily planning and implementation of operator assignments to ensure all business requirements are met in a timely and efficient manner.
- Supervise and Provide Direction: Offer guidance and support to the Master Control team, ensuring staff have clear directions and assistance when needed.
- Monitor and Verify Operations: Passive monitoring of the master control playlist, playout functions and program outputs to ensure a smooth operation and resolve any issues that arise.
- Communication Management: Facilitate proactive communication between internal departments and external clients, ensuring all event details are clearly understood before, during, and after the broadcast.
- Reporting: Provide detailed reports on event performance to stakeholders, outlining successes and areas for improvement. Identify and capture performance data metrics that can be used to track compliance with client, management and operator performance expectations.
- Workflow Management: Organize and optimize Master Control workflows, maintaining high standards of quality, efficiency, and accuracy. Responsibilities include scheduling, overseeing and documenting technology research, implementation, testing and updates for the operations team.
- Staff Management: Participate in the recruitment, training, and development of Master Control staff, ensuring ongoing performance evaluations, coaching, and opportunities for growth.
- Issue Resolution: Proactively identify operational or technical issues and work quickly to resolve them, ensuring minimal disruption to broadcasting.
- Performance Oversight: Communicate operational standards to the team and monitor performance to ensure these standards are met consistently.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Broadcast Technology, Communications, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
- Minimum 3-5 years of experience in a Master Control or broadcast operations environment, with a focus on leadership or supervision.
- In-depth knowledge of broadcast operations, live broadcast operations, automation systems, and playout functions.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to multitask, coordinate processes and make quick decisions while managing a high volume of work with a focus on detail.
- Ability to anticipate, prevent and troubleshoot technical and operations problems in real time for resolution.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills are required to interact effectively with employees, executives, vendors and clients under pressure. Openly shares information with all levels of the business.
- Detail-oriented with a high level of accuracy and accountability.
- Flexibility to work evening, weekend, and holiday shifts as required.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with broadcast automation systems (e.g., Evertz, Pebble, Grass Valley, or similar).
- Familiarity with live broadcast environments and the associated technical demands.
- Previous experience in staff management, including hiring and performance management.
- Intermediate to advanced math skills with a strong sense of numbers. Proficiency at error identification when performing or reviewing work; time calculations to detect time and date discrepancies along with ability to make standard and military time conversions across time zones.
