Basic Function
Provide for the safety of spectators, participants, and staff involved in aquatic activities and present aquatic instructional programs. Provide staff support for the office and perform clean-up of pool and locker room areas.

Typical Duties
- Enforce safety rules in a polite but consistent manner.
- Perform lifesaving and first aid procedures as appropriate for the situation.
- Teach learn to swim programs to a wide variety of community members, including those experiencing a disability and senior citizens.
- Provide routine clean-up, sanitizing, and general maintenance in pool and locker room areas.
- Provide office support including cash handling activities, make change and operate a credit card machine.
- Operate a cash register with a point of sale, checking in patrons, selling passes, creating accounts and keeping a tally sheet of users in the building.
- Perform chlorine and pH water tests and document according to the test schedule.
- Complete daily attendance and revenue reports as instructed.
- Prepare daily and monthly lesson plans for learn to swim classes.
- Evaluate and recommend swim levels to new students and resolve customer concerns regarding swim lessons.
- Register students and perform aquatic instruction at all levels of swimming programs and other special conditioning activities.
Position Requirements
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Eighteen years of age at time of employment.
2. Upon hire, must possess and maintain certification in Standard First Aid, Lifeguarding, and CPR-PR as recognized by the American Red Cross (or equivalent).
3. Must obtain within 180 days of hire and maintain afterwards Water Safety Instructor certification.
4. Prefer ability and willingness to work nights and weekends.
5. All qualified candidates must be able to demonstrate all lifesaving and first aid skills required by the position.
6. Must be able to pass American Red Cross Swim Proficiency Test.
a. Must be able to swim continuously 150 yards of front crawl and breaststroke, tread water for 2 minutes using only your legs, and swim 50 more yards (must be able to keep face in the water with good breath control, goggles may be used).
b. Must be able to within 100 seconds: start in the water, swim 20 yards, surface dive to 12 ft and retrieve a 10 lb. brick, return to the surface and kick on your back to return to the starting point, holding the brick with both hands and keeping your face at or near the surface and exit the water without using a ladder or the steps.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
1. Six months of experience in aquatic instruction, class preparation, and organization preferred.
2. Applicant must have good communication skills with the ability to deal with the public in a pleasant, tactful, and courteous manner.
3. Basic computer skills, including word, excel and email functions.
4. Ability to operate a point-of-sale computer system.
5. Knowledge of Alaska Dept of Environmental Conservation health codes and regulations for pool operations.
OTHER
1. This position requires a criminal background check, which includes fingerprinting.

A recreation facility where conditions are pleasant; good, clean conditions with minor accident probability; requires short periods of moderate lifting, pushing or pulling lbs.).
This position falls under the Borough's Blood Borne Pathogen (BBP) Exposure Control Program as it is reasonably anticipated that infrequent exposure to blood or other bodily fluids may occur while performing some job duties.
