What You'll Do
The Logistics Specialist performs responsible skilled and administrative work in the procurement and distribution of station supplies needed for departmental operations. The Logistics Specialist coordinates the distribution of uniforms, station wear, personal protective equipment, and maintains inventory, records for issue, repair and service dates for compliance. The Logistics Specialist assists other divisions and does related work as required. Work is performed independently and reviewed by the Assistant Fire Chief or Administrative Battalion Chief.
Essential Tasks & Responsibilities
Essential Tasks
- Reviews for approval of all station supply requests. Process requests, issue items and enter appropriate record keeping details in RMS.
- Research, procure, inventory and deliver all station supplies including but not limited to janitorial supplies, medical supplies, office supplies, kitchen supplies, grounds maintenance and landscaping supplies and other items required or authorized by Department Administration.
- Review for approval and issue of station wear requests, uniforms, footwear, firefighting equipment, turnout gear and PPE. Maintain inventory, issue and required records list to ensure accountability and accurate data in the RMS.
- Assists in the preparation and administration of the Fire Department budget as needed.
- Responds to emergency scenes for rehabilitation, equipment malfunctions and/or operation of Air/Light Truck as needed or requested.
- Mixing and delivery of landscaping herbicides used at department facilities.
- Conducts and/or assists vendors with annual compliance testing on extinguishers, fire service equipment and NFPA 1582 requirements.
- Pick-up, package and ship sensitive electronic equipment for testing calibration and certification. Deliver to appropriate company when completed and enter into RMS.
- Maintains comprehensive record management system (RMS) for inventory, compliance/testing regulations, and costs for goods and services.
- Solicit pricing, procures supplies and equipment for inventory and facility delivery.
- Pick-up, load and unload equipment, materials and supplies at vendor sites for delivery to department facilities or training sites.
- Drive and operate department dump truck and department apparatus as needed.
- Operate department forklift and other hi-lift equipment as needed for loading, unloading or placement of supplies and materials.
- Repairing of firefighting equipment and service equipment.
- Ability to climb and descend ladders of various heights, navigate or walk on various shaped roofs.
- Ensures that all work is performed in accordance with OSHA and City safety standards and policies.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent
- Knowledge of the principles, methods and equipment used in the modern fire service.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships through written or oral communications.
- Understanding of local, state and federal regulations and OSHA requirements.
- Ability to obtain a Forklift/tow motor operator license within six (6) months of employment.
- Ability to obtain a North Carolina pesticide/herbicide license within one (1) year of employment.
- Valid Class B Driver's License and/or the ability to obtain a valid NC Class B Driver's license within six months of employment.

Physical Requirements
Hearing/Speaking - Expressing and/or receiving information by means of spoken word are both necessary to converse with internal and external customers including co-workers, citizens and applicants.
Visual Abilities - the ability to perceive via eyesight is required for this position:
- Acuity, far - clarity of vision at 20 feet or more. Both eyes 20/25 - R 20/30 - L 20/30 corrected.
- Acuity, near - clarity of vision at 20 inches or less. Both eyes 20/25 corrected. Must be able to see work-related business documents close at hand.
- Depth perception - Three-dimensional vision and the ability to judge distance and space relationships. Depth perception - 4
- Field of Vision - the area that can be seen up and down or to the right or left while eyes are focused on one point. Must be able to see a wide span of area.
- Accommodation - Must be able to adjust the eye lens to bring an object into sharp focus.
- Color vision - ability to identify and distinguish colors.

Physical Surroundings
- The Fire Logistics Specialist is subject to working inside or outdoors. Position is subjected to various weather conditions (sleet, snow, ice, rain, wind, extremely hot or cold) whenever emergencies occur or while performing regular duties.
Hazards
- The Fire Logistics Specialist may be exposed to trash, debris, numerous chemicals smoke, combustible and flammable materials, various gases, body fluids or other hazards. The work performed is subject to the final standards of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration guidelines.
