Role Overview

Senior Veterinary Assistants and Veterinary Technicians at AVC play a lead clinical role in patient care, hospital flow, and team development. You will work closely with doctors, assist with advanced procedures, monitor anesthesia, educate clients, and help guide Veterinary Assistants and newer team members.

This position requires strong judgment, initiative, and emotional intelligence, especially in fast-paced or high-acuity situations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Independently obtain thorough patient histories, vital signs, and assessments
  • Assist doctors with exams, procedures, surgeries, and dentistry
  • Monitor anesthesia and recover patients safely
  • Place IV catheters, draw blood, administer SQ/IM/IV injections (role-dependent)
  • Perform and interpret in-house lab work (IDEXX, UA, fecals, cytology, SNAP tests)
  • Prepare, administer, and document medications accurately
  • Lead exam room flow and ensure accurate medical records and billing
  • Communicate clearly and compassionately with clients regarding care plans, estimates, and discharge instructions
  • Mentor and support Veterinary Assistants and junior team members
  • Maintain hospital standards for cleanliness, organization, and Fear Free handling

Qualifications

Required

  • Minimum 2–3 years experience in a veterinary hospital
  • Strong technical and clinical skills with confidence in patient handling
  • Proven ability to work independently and prioritize effectively
  • Excellent client communication and emotional intelligence
  • Commitment to Fear Free, low-stress patient care
  • Team-oriented, accountable, and detail-driven

For Veterinary Technician candidates

  • Credentialed (LVT / CVT / RVT) or actively pursuing licensure
  • Strong anesthesia and analgesia experience preferred

Preferred

  • IDEXX in-house lab experience
  • AVImark experience
  • Experience mentoring or training team members
  • Interest in integrative or holistic veterinary medicine
