The mission of The New York Times is to seek the truth and help people understand the world. That means independent journalism is at the heart of all we do as a company. It's why we have a world-renowned newsroom that sends journalists to report on the ground from nearly 160 countries. It's why we focus deeply on how our readers will experience our journalism, from print to audio to a world-class digital and app destination. And it's why our business strategy centers on making journalism so good that it's worth paying for.
The New York Times is continuing to expand its video journalism, identifying compelling visual stories across the depth and breadth of our report. We showcase the expertise of Times journalists on-camera, share urgent news updates, produce on-the-ground reporting, pioneering Visual Investigations, and video podcasts.

You have a strong video editing background and a portfolio that demonstrates versatility in style as well as the ability to deliver engaging work on tight deadlines. • Understand our publishing platform and the workflow for getting videos onsite and to social platforms.
  • Organize raw files and independently source archival and wires material.
  • Experiment with different forms of vertical and mobile visual storytelling on and off-platform.
  • Demonstrate excellent news judgment.
  • Work within a newsroom environment and under deadline pressure.
  • Occasionally guide junior staff on edits and be comfortable working autonomously.
  • Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.
  • This role reports to a Senior Producer based in LA.

Basic Qualifications

  • 3+ years of professional digital video editing experience.
  • Expertise in Adobe Premiere and Creative Suite as well as experience troubleshooting technical issues.
  • Proven ability to craft scenes, source footage from wires and other sources for a project and edit a video with oversight from managers and senior staff.
  • Thorough knowledge of current events, with experience covering news.
  • Experiment with creating fresh original videos related to the news.
  • Must have an impressive portfolio of video editing primarily for digital or broadcast.
  • Must understand all of the elements and steps needed to create exceptional content.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bring a digital first mindset to editing on-platform and for social media.
  • The ability to structure and write scripts.
  • Under intense deadlines in a high-pressure newsroom setting.
  • A foundational knowledge of legal, ethical, copyright and usage issues for visuals.
  • Well-versed in the world of social and digital media, with a keen eye on what competitors are doing and what new tools are being used.
