Purpose

The Teacher Assistant plays a vital role in supporting classroom teachers, supervising students, and ensuring the smooth operation of daily activities across multiple preschool classrooms. This position is designed to provide consistent and flexible support where needed, contributing to a high-quality, Christian-based early childhood education experience for children and families at St. Luke's Preschool.

Primary Responsibilities

The Teacher Assistant – Float will:

• Staff Break Coverage

• Provide scheduled breaks to classroom teachers throughout the day in a timely and reliable manner.

• Communicate with the Director or Lead Teachers to ensure full coverage needs are met.

• Classroom Supervision

• Accompany the 2s Jr. Preschool classroom during outdoor time, ensuring safe and active supervision.

• Assist in classroom supervision during indoor activities in the 2s Jr. Preschool class.

• Directly assist with toileting routines in the 2s Jr. Preschool class as needed.

• Snack & Clean-up Duties

• Prepare and distribute snacks for Pre-K, 3s, and 2s classes on scheduled workdays.

• Support teachers in snack clean-up, including dishes and sanitizing surfaces.

• Assist with general classroom and kitchen clean-up at the end of the day.

• Morning Support

• Greet children and families at drop-off, offering a warm, welcoming, and organized start to the school day.

• Assist children in storing belongings and transitioning smoothly into the classroom routine.

• Administrative & Event Support

• Assist the Director with administrative or operational tasks as requested.

• Attend and participate in designated staff meetings and special events, including evening or weekend functions as needed.

• Serve as a substitute in any classroom on non-scheduled workdays if available.

Curriculum & Behavioral Support

• Support Lead Teachers in implementing curriculum and maintaining classroom routines.

• Contribute to group activities including music, storytime, and structured play.

• Engage with children using the PBS (Positive Behavior Support) model: offering calm redirection, positive reinforcement, and collaborative problem solving.

Qualifications

• Previous hands-on experience in early childhood education or childcare required

• Ability to lift up to 40 lbs. and maintain physical stamina throughout the day

• Current First Aid/CPR certification

• Valid Food Handler's Permit

• Completion of training in:

• Bloodborne pathogens

• Diocese of Olympia's "Safeguarding God's People" program

• Background check required annually

• Must demonstrate positive, patient, and energetic demeanor

• Knowledge of emergent curriculum and/or Reggio Emilia philosophy a plus

Note: Attendance at St. Luke's worship services is not required for this position.

Compensation & Hours

• Hourly Rate: $18.00-$20.00 (Non-exempt)

• Average Weekly Hours: Approximately 16 hours/week (plus additional hours when substituting or assisting with events)

Accountability

• Reports to: Preschool Director

• Accountable to: The Rector and Vestry of St. Luke's Memorial Church
