Job Type: Full-Time | 9-Month Contract (Potential for Continuation)

Position Summary

We are seeking a highly capable and detail-oriented VMware System Administrator to provide daily operational support for a mission-critical virtual infrastructure. This role is primarily remote but requires proximity to the Alexandria, VA area for occasional on-site support, particularly for emergency maintenance and new equipment installations at the local data center.

The current contract has approximately nine (9) months remaining. While the renewal status is not yet confirmed, historically, incumbent personnel with strong performance have been retained. Our team currently enjoys a stellar reputation for high-quality service delivery, and we are seeking candidates who can contribute to and uphold that standard.

Key Responsibilities
System Monitoring & Health Checks
  • Monitor VMware host and cluster health: CPU, memory, storage usage, NIC redundancy, and hardware sensors.
  • Maintain current VMware Tools versions across all VMs.
  • Track and resolve alerts, events, and task failures in vCenter and related systems.
  • Confirm disaster recovery replication status (when applicable).
Storage & Snapshot Management
  • Remove outdated or non-compliant VM snapshots.
  • Clean up orphaned VM files (e.g., VMDKs, logs, detached snapshots).
  • Monitor datastore capacity and performance (latency, IOPS).
Backup & Recovery Assurance
  • Confirm successful execution of VM backups via tools such as Veeam or Commvault.
  • Troubleshoot backup failures and work collaboratively with the backup team.
Performance Optimization
  • Analyze performance trends across virtual infrastructure.
  • Audit and remediate non-compliant VM configurations.
  • Resolve DRS contention and ensure proper resource balancing.
Patch Management & Updates
  • Apply patches to ESXi hosts and vCenter components using scheduled/staged processes.
  • Run hardware health checks via iLO/iDRAC/IPMI and escalate issues as needed.
Documentation & Collaboration
  • Maintain accurate documentation of virtual environments, including VMs, datastores, and network configurations.
  • Partner with storage, networking, and application teams to troubleshoot and optimize environment performance.
  • Participate in an on-call rotation and be available for on-site emergency response or install events as required.
Required Qualifications
  • Hands-on experience with VMware vSphere, vCenter, and ESXi (v7.0 or later).
  • Expertise with snapshots, VMFS, vSAN/NFS/iSCSI storage, and orphaned file cleanup.
  • Proficiency with VMware best practices and daily system monitoring.
  • Working knowledge of PowerCLI, VMware Aria Operations (vROps), or similar tools.
  • Strong grasp of networking/storage architecture in virtualized environments.
  • Proven incident response and resolution experience in VMware environments.
  • Excellent documentation and communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
  • VMware Certified Professional (VCP) or higher.
  • Experience with backup solutions like Veeam or Commvault.
  • Familiarity with automation scripting (e.g., PowerShell, PowerCLI).
  • Knowledge of VMware NSX, vSAN, or hybrid cloud environments.
  • Experience with security hardening (e.g., STIGs) and compliance in federal environments.
Work Environment

  • Primarily remote, but local presence is essential for:

  • On-site emergency support.

  • Physical installation or configuration of new hardware.
  • Standard business hours with occasional after-hours work during maintenance windows.
  • Participation in an on-call rotation for critical support needs.
  • High-performing and collaborative environment with cross-functional engagement.
