An Overview
If you are a technology professional interested in applying your skills to support public safety, consider joining the professional staff of the Alexandria Police Department. As a member of the Technical Services Division, you will manage mission-critical databases and database management systems that ensure data availability, security, and integrity for departmental operations and decision-making.
Under the general direction of a designated supervisor, you will:
- Monitor and maintain databases to ensure optimal performance and reliability.
- Perform database backup, recovery, and maintenance procedures to ensure data integrity and business continuity.
- Support operational personnel in fulfilling the department's mission by ensuring real-time data availability and system stability.
- Implement and enforce data management standards, requirements, and security specifications.
- Utilize departmental databases to obtain, analyze, and deliver data that informs key operational and strategic decisions.
- Manage technology in a 24/7 public safety environment where system reliability, security, and data integrity are critical.
What You Should Bring
The ideal candidate will have experience supporting complex information systems and managing databases in a fast-paced environment. The successful candidate will be able to develop advanced statistical and analytical reports using SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) or similar tools and have direct, hands-on experience developing .NET web applications.
Candidates should demonstrate:
- Thorough knowledge of systems analysis and design, database development and administration, computer programming/scripting, and documentation best practices.
- The ability to understand user information needs and develop database structures and systems that fulfill those needs.
- Experience planning, implementing, and monitoring database development projects from concept through deployment.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret data and present practical solutions.
- A collaborative approach to supporting mission-critical systems in a law enforcement environment, where data accuracy, integrity, and security are essential.
The Opportunity - Examples of Work
- Monitor and analyze database performance and system health to ensure efficient and uninterrupted operations.
- Troubleshoot and resolve database and application issues reported by users or automated systems.
- Install, configure, and maintain database management systems and related software to support operational needs.
- Plan, test, and execute database backup and disaster recovery procedures to prevent data loss and ensure business continuity.
- Design, develop, and maintain processes, scripts, and procedures to retrieve, transform, and manipulate data used for analysis, statistics, and investigations.
- Create reports and data interfaces using reporting tools and web applications to import, export, and visualize data.
- Manage user permissions and audit access logs to maintain compliance with security and confidentiality standards.
- Schedule and perform database and system upgrades to ensure compatibility and reliability. Ensure the continuous 24/7 operation of mission-critical public safety systems.
- Collaborate extensively with vendors, Police Command Staff, and City IT personnel to support system performance, data integrity, and secure information sharing.
- Completes required annual security training and performs other related work as assigned.

Four Year College Degree; Bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field; three years progressively responsible IT experience; minimum two years working in database management areas; SQL experience; system design and programming experience; supervisory/leadership experience; strong organizational and multitasking skills; ability to work with sensitive and confidential data in a manner prescribed by state and local laws and department policies. ability to communicate effectively and professionally with all levels of the organization, City staff, and outside vendors.
Preferred Qualifications- Four-year college degree in computer science or a related field.
- Five years of progressively responsible IT experience.
- Minimum two years of experience working as a database administrator.
- Project leadership experience.
- Experience working with law enforcement data systems, including Records Management Systems (RMS) and Computer-Aided Dispatch (CAD) systems.
- Strong experience using SQL and PL/SQL to interact with relational databases (e.g., Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server).
- Skilled in database debugging, testing, and performance optimization.
- Strong analytical skills with experience translating user requirements into functional design and technical solutions.
- Experience using Microsoft SQL database tools such as SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS), SQL Profiler, SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS), and SQL Server Migration Assistant (SSMA).
- Coding and programming skills are desired but not required.
