As a Safety Coordinator, you will help build and sustain a strong safety culture by being a visible presence on our heavy civil and concrete paving projects. This position plays a key role in field-level safety support, training, and hazard prevention. You'll work alongside our crews to make safety personal, practical, and effective. 

Location: This position is based in Nashville, TN, with occasional travel to other project sites as needed. 

What You'll Do: 

  • Job Site Presence: Conduct daily and weekly safety inspections on job sites involving slipform paving, batch plant operations, excavation, rebar/form work, and heavy equipment. Address hazards promptly. 
  • Training & Orientation: Lead new hire safety orientations, conduct weekly toolbox talks, and provide on-the-spot safety coaching to ensure a safe work environment. Reinforce safe work practices and ensure understanding of job-specific hazards. 
  • Incident Response & Reporting: Support incident response efforts, assist in investigations, and help identify root causes. Document findings in our HCSS Safety system and ensure timely follow-up. 
  • Proactive Hazard Identification: Observe site operations for potential risks. Work with crews to develop solutions and verify implementation of corrective actions. 
  • Regulatory Compliance: Enforce OSHA 1926 standards, DOT regulations, and company policies. Maintain accurate records, including JHAs, SDSs, and inspection logs, to ensure compliance with regulations. 
  • Employee Engagement: Foster open communication, encourage peer-to-peer safety conversations, and support worker participation. Promote the belief that "this is your safety culture." 
  • PPE & Equipment Checks: Monitor correct use of personal protective equipment and assist in verifying that equipment is inspected, tagged, and used safely. 
  • Digital Documentation: Record all safety-related activities using HCSS Safety, including meetings, inspections, observations, and incidents. Help monitor leading indicators and track trends. 

What We Look For: 

  • 2+ years of safety experience in construction environments, preferred. 
  • Solid understanding of OSHA construction regulations and DOT/FMCSA safety rules. 
  • OSHA 30-Hour Certification (construction), required.  
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to lead safety conversations in the field. 
  • Comfortable using digital technology. 
  • Bilingual preferred: Ability to communicate effectively with field employees who require bilingual support, primarily in Spanish. 
  • CPR/First Aid Certification required. CPR/First Aid Instructor preferred. Current or former EMT/Paramedic experience is desirable. 
  • Additional Requirements: 
  • Ability to gain clearance for restricted/high-security zones (e.g., airport AOA, military bases). 
  • Willingness to travel as needed.  
  • Valid driver's license.  
  • Physical ability to lift 50 lbs, climb, walk, kneel, squat, push, pull, and enter confined spaces.

Hi-Way Paving, Inc. is a general contractor in the heavy/civil construction space focusing on projects involving significant amounts of concrete paving on airfields.
