Position Summary
The Construction Crew Member supports Baker Design Build's field operations by performing general and skilled construction labor on infrastructure, site development, and building projects — with a strong emphasis on ADA curb ramp installation and compliance. This role ensures work is performed safely, efficiently, and according to project specifications, plans, and applicable accessibility standards.
Crew Members work closely with superintendents, foremen, and other trades to maintain quality, schedule, and safety standards that reflect Baker Design Build's reputation for excellence.
Key Responsibilities
General Construction Duties
- Perform a wide range of field construction activities including demolition, excavation, grading, forming, pouring, and finishing concrete.
- Load, unload, and distribute materials, tools, and equipment to maintain efficient workflow.
- Erect and dismantle forms, shoring, barricades, and temporary structures as directed.
- Operate and maintain basic hand tools and small power tools (saws, grinders, drills, compactors, etc.).
- Assist skilled trades (carpenters, masons, equipment operators) in layout, installation, and finishing work.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and hazard-free job site in compliance with Baker Design Build's safety standards.
- Participate in pre-task safety meetings and daily toolbox talks.
- Follow all company, OSHA, and project safety policies including proper use of PPE and adherence to traffic control procedures in right-of-way work zones.
ADA Curb Ramp Construction Duties
- Prepare sites for curb ramp construction, including demolition of existing sidewalks, curbs, or driveways in accordance with project plans.
- Excavate, grade, and compact subgrade to achieve required slopes and cross-slopes within ADA tolerances.
- Construct forms according to engineered drawings and ADA design specifications.
- Mix, pour, spread, and finish concrete to create smooth, slip-resistant surfaces with required thickness and slope.
- Install detectable warning surfaces (truncated domes) accurately per ADA and FDOT standards.
- Ensure transitions between roadway, gutter, and sidewalk meet accessibility design standards (maximum 8.33% running slope, 2% cross-slope).
- Use digital and manual measurement tools (levels, slope gauges, straightedges) to verify compliance with ADA, FDOT, and project specifications.
- Backfill, compact, and restore adjacent surfaces following pour and cure completion.
- Coordinate with inspectors and project managers to correct or adjust non-compliant work before acceptance.
- Apply curing compounds, joint sealants, and protective barriers as directed.
- Perform quality checks to confirm drainage, alignment, and accessibility standards are met before turnover.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Working knowledge of concrete finishing, forming, and placement techniques.
- Familiarity with ADA curb ramp specifications, FDOT Standard Plans, and local municipality standards.
- Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, slope diagrams, and grade elevations.
- Basic understanding of soil compaction, drainage, and site preparation.
- Effective communication and teamwork skills.
- Physical stamina and ability to lift 50+ lbs, stand or walk for extended periods, and work in all weather conditions.
- Commitment to safety and continuous improvement.
Education & Experience
- High school diploma or GED preferred.
- 1–3 years of experience in general construction, concrete, or site work required.
- Prior experience with ADA ramp or sidewalk construction strongly preferred.
- Valid Florida driver's license and reliable transportation required.
- OSHA 10-Hour Certification preferred (or willingness to obtain within 60 days of hire).
Working Conditions
- Outdoor construction environment; exposure to weather, noise, dust, and moving equipment.
- Must wear company-provided PPE (hard hat, reflective vest, safety glasses, gloves, steel-toe boots).
- Frequent bending, lifting, climbing, and carrying materials up to 50 lbs.
- May require overtime, weekend work, or travel to nearby project sites as scheduled.
