What You Will Achieve
As Manager Lab Instrumentation Services within the Preclinical & Translational Services ("P&TS") organization you will be a key member of the newly formed, P&TS Lab Instrumentation Services Team which has responsibility for performing preventative maintenance, calibrations, timely repairs and installation of R&D equipment which is critical for our R&D scientists' development of novel medicines.
The successful candidate for the Manager P&TS LIS-Groton, CT role will be able to work independently to install, calibrate, maintain and trouble shoot and repair on a timely basis our Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry ("LC-MS") equipment and as time permits, provide general support with other instrumentation equipment such as analyzers, flow cytometers, liquid handlers, plate readers, etc.
This hands-on role requires expertise across many disciplines including mechanical engineering, laboratory automation, robotics, project management, instrument protocol & method development, hardware & software troubleshooting, liquid handling, instrument quality control and workflow development & validation.
You will actively partner with P&TS scientists, Global Workplace Experience leads, and external vendors to perform prioritization exercises and to ensure equipment is installed, calibrated, regularly maintained & serviced and that repairs are conducted on a timely basis.
Work independently and/or with minimum supervision to conduct laboratory instrumentation service requests including first response, triage/troubleshooting, repairs, installation and configuration.
Evaluate and develop strategies and programs that assure instrumentation equipment and systems meet or exceed the original manufacturer's specifications throughout the assets lifecycle.
Provide GxP (Good Laboratory or Manufacturing Practices) compliance and audit readiness.
ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES
- Independently service and maintain lab instrumentation equipment so that scientist can deliver break-through medicines that change patients' lives.
- Perform system diagnostics of highly technical and complex scientific equipment as necessary.
- Provide advanced support and troubleshooting on a wide range of highly technical and complex analytical scientific instrumentation and equipment.
- Demonstrate a sound knowledge of highly technical and complex laboratory equipment with expert knowledge in LC-MS equipment
- Responsible for identifying and managing high dollar cost and time savings to the department.
- Develop strategic alliances with the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) to leverage Pfizer's size and scale to a technology advantage.
- Identify problems and inefficiencies in processes and methods, then propose and implement improvements upon approval.
- Develop new processes to improve efficiency and cost savings.
- Lead or participate in the installation, configuration and operation of instrumentation and systems software. This will include interacting with Digital and other groups as necessary.

- Using discretion and judgment independently creates, manages and drives cost reduction initiatives with approval.

Here Is What You Need (Minimum Requirements)
- BS degree in Engineering, Chemistry or Biochemistry with 4+ years of experience.
- AS degree in Engineering, Chemistry or Biochemistry with minimum of 8 years of experience.
- Or a H.S. degree and a minimum of 10 years' relevant laboratory instrumentation services experience or extensive OEM training with a minimum of five to ten years' engineering experience in support of high-end analytical instrumentation.
- Must have experience and repair competency with a wide range of laboratory instrumentation or automation systems, including, but not limited to: LC-MS, HPLC, analyzers, flow spectrometers, Tecan, Biomeks, Beckman liquid handlers plate readers.
- Experience with GxP compliance.
Bonus Points If You Have (Preferred Requirements)
- Prior experience working in areas of pharmaceutical laboratory automation or at an OEM as a service technician.
- Hands-on experience working with automated tube & plate handling instrumentation, robotics, custom workflow design and/or protocol development and implementation.
- Excellent customer service skills with commitment to timely delivery and high quality of work products.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to apply novel and innovative approaches.
- Demonstrated ability to develop innovative and creative solutions for complex issues that apply lean principles to solve daily production issues which streamline workflows and minimize risks for errors.
- Well organized with ability to multi-task and adjust to changing priorities.
- Demonstrated experience collaborating with stakeholders and external hardware & software vendors.
- Demonstration of excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to develop strong collaborative relationships within and outside Pfizer and to help manage service delivery of external parties.
- Well organized with ability to multi-task and adjust to changing priorities.
- Experience in working with multi-functional, cross line teams is preferred.
- Proficiency with personal computers, including a working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications and relevant scientific software.
- Demonstration of ability to present in the form of internal and external presentations.

- Partners with preclinical & translational scientists, global workplace experience leads, and external vendors to ensure equipment is regularly maintained and that repairs are conducted on a timely basis.
PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS
- Position will require working in the lab to service and repair equipment, lifting, sitting, standing, walking, bending and the ability to solve complex technical problems.
NON-STANDARD WORK SCHEDULE, TRAVEL OR ENVIRONMENT REQUIREMENTS
- Candidates may be asked on a limited basis to travel to other Pfizer domestic sites to meet with team members and to conduct preventative maintenance and repair activities.

The annual base salary for this position ranges from $96,300.00 to $160, In addition, this position is eligible for participation in Pfizer's Global Performance Plan with a bonus target of 12.5% of the base salary and eligibility to participate in our share based long term incentive program.
