Northrop Grumman Aerospace Systems has an opening for a Staff Software Engineer join our Global Surveillance Division team of qualified, diverse individuals. This position will be located in Melbourne, Florida.
The Staff Engineer Software (DevOps Lead) position will be focused on supporting DevOps needs for the software teams.
Your responsibilities will include working with internal business partners to gather requirements, prototyping, and architecting complex solutions supporting the development and implementation of an existing display and its functionality into a modern Java-based framework. Key responsibilities include working with internal business partners to gather requirements as well as reviewing and updating legacy requirements, prototyping, and architecting complex solutions supporting the display. In addition, this role will also be supporting the development of automated testing solutions for the display. This will include deploying, automating, maintaining, troubleshooting, and improving the systems and software infrastructure running smoothly related to Display functionality. The role requires you to have hands-on technical experience and a can-do approach towards environmental automation and management along with continuous improvements. You will be a team member working in agile development process, responsible for the design and implementation of application builds, releases, deployment along with configuration activities. You will serve as an organization spokesperson on advanced projects and/or programs. Acts as advisor to management and customers on advanced technical research studies and applications. Apply advanced technical principles, theories, and concepts. Contributes to the development of new principles and concepts. Work on unusually complex technical problems and provide solutions which are highly innovative and ingenious. Works under consultative direction toward predetermined long-range goals and objectives. Assignments are often self-initiated. Determine and pursue courses of action necessary to obtain desired results. Work checked through consultation and agreement with others rather than by formal review of superior. Develops advanced technological ideas and guides their development into a final product. Erroneous decisions or recommendations would typically result in failure to achieve critical organizational objectives and affect the image of the organization's technological capability. This will include deploying, automating, maintaining, troubleshooting, and improving the systems and software infrastructure running smoothly.
You will be expected to take ownership of hard problems and drive toward a solution, while working in a multi-discipline team environment. You will develop, modify, and maintain customized or standardized applications using software engineering best practices and standards, and participate in the full life cycle of software development, to include requirements development, modeling and design, application development, unit to CSCI testing, integration, formal system testing, release, installation, and maintenance. A solid experience in developing graphical displays and taking advantage of hardware acceleration using C/C++, Java, and other OOP languages in a Linux environment.
The ideal candidate will have the ability to take ownership of hard problems and drive to a solution, while working in a team environment and provide leadership for its implementation. It is critical that you understand the software development life cycle and have an in-depth knowledge of automated testing to facilitate and analyze large data sets. The Software Engineer will participate in the full life cycle of software development, to include requirements development, modeling and design, application development, unit to CSCI testing, integration, formal system testing, release, installation, and maintenance. The Staff Engineer Software will apply technical expertise in solving complex integrations problems and interact with Program Management, external suppliers and/or government customers. Therefore, excellent verbal, written and interpersonal skills are required. A solid experience in bash scripting, C/C++, or other OOP languages, in a Linux environment is required. An active in scope DoD secret security clearance and ability to obtain and maintain a Special Program Access clearance is required. The candidate will design, implement, and manage the integration and testing strategies of a large software system.
Essential Functions:
- Lead a team of DevOps engineers in support of a large program
- Lead the adoption of software factory standard and deployment of software factory reference implementations on existing programs
- Lead the metrics automation and engineering review on programs
- Lead the training of users on DevSecOps lifecycle best practices - continuous build, continuous integration, continuous test, continuous cyber, and continuous deployment pipeline across programs
- Lead the definition, design, and implementation of all segments of DevSecOps lifecycle - continuous build, continuous integration, continuous test, continuous cyber, and continuous deployment pipeline on a program
- Continuously develop, scale and integrate the DevSecOps environment across multiple networks
- Providing leadership to the software engineering staff.
- Mentoring and training the software engineering staff.
- Full lifecycle design, implementation, and unit testing of software
- Working with various team members to integrate functionality with other software components.
- Providing technical solutions to a wide range of complex difficult problems that are imaginative, thorough, practicable, and consistent with programs objectives.
- Ensures software best practices are followed.
- Ensure software standards are met.
- Contributing to the full life cycle of system development in collaboration with a multidisciplinary team. This includes requirements development, modeling and design, application development, integration, formal system testing, release, installation, and maintenance.

- Designs, develops, documents, tests and debugs applications software and systems that contain logical and mathematical solutions.
- Conducts multidisciplinary research and collaborates with equipment designers and/or hardware engineers in the planning, design, development, and utilization of electronic data processing systems for product and commercial software.
- Determines computer user needs; analyzes system capabilities to resolve problems on program intent, output requirements, input data acquisition, programming techniques and controls.
- Gather and report software metrics.
- Support software working groups with internal and external customers and stakeholders.
- Develop software products from all phases of the software lifecycle
- Ability to analyze the system as a whole and determine potential impacts of integrating new technologies.
- Review, analyze, and incorporate technical requirements into end-to-end system architectures to include testing and documentation of results
Basic Qualifications:
- Staff Software Engineer: Bachelor's degree in a Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) discipline from an accredited university with 12 or more years software engineering experience, or Master's degree and 10 or more years' software engineering experience or a PhD with 8 or more years of software engineering experience.
- Experience in defining and implementing DevSecOps lifecycle - continuous (build, integration, test, deployment, cyber, monitoring)
- Experience configuring RedHat Linux and Microsoft Windows within a secure environment.
- Experience with build tools (i.e., Maven, Ant, cmake) and/or continuous integration environments (i.e., Jenkins, GitLab, Bamboo) and/or repositories (i.e. Nexus, JFROG Artifactory).
- Experience with one of the following configuration management systems: GIT, GitLab, GitHub, Bitbucket
- Experience with Static & Dynamic Code Analysis Tools or Fuzzing Tools such as: Coverity, Fortify, CodeDx AND/OR SonarQube
- Experience with applicational containerization technologies: Container management (i.e. Podman, Docker), Container orchestration (i.e. Kubernetes, OpenShift), Container repository (i.e. Quay)
- In-depth working knowledge and experience with developing software and scripts on various programming languages: C, C++, Python, PowerShell, Bash, YAML
- In-depth working knowledge of the full software development life cycle.
- In-depth working knowledge with the Agile software development process.
- Familiarity with the Atlassian tool suite with add-ons like Git and Confluence.
- Experience with configuration management using industry standard tools and processes.
- Experience with test automation tools and frameworks.
- Must have the ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret clearance.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a special program access clearance
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field
- Familiar with one of the following metric tools: Tableau, Grafana
- Familiar with all phases of the software development life cycle and Agile framework as a Product Owner, SCRUM Master, and/or team member
- Experience with REST API frameworks (i.e. Atlassian, GitLab)
- Familiar with Safety-Critical standards and Applications/Systems
- Experience with Code Coverage or Unit Testing Applications (e.g. LDRA, Bullseye, Valgrind)
- Experience with SELinux and Microsoft Windows development and configuration
- Active in-scope DoD Top Secret Clearance with program PAR.
- Experience with configuration of virtual machines (VMs) and virtual networks (VPC, NSX-T, NSX-V)
- Experience with integrating databases (e.g. MariaDB/MySQL) with applications
- Experience with machine learning.
- Experience applying commercial products to military applications.
- Experience implementing and developing in containers.
- Experience with Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) techniques and tools.
- Experience with Windows and Linux.
- Experience with DOORS.
- Active certification at DOD 8570 IAT Level II (Security+)
- Experience with formal software test and Weapon System evaluations
