As a Health Aide within the Coastal Health District at the Georgia Department of Public Health, you will join a dedicated group of public health professionals that help support the overall mission and vision of protecting lives of Georgian residents in a variety of ways.

All Coastal Health District County Health Department employees are deemed essential employees in the event of an emergency. As such, you may be called on to participate in an event not limited to but including, staffing a shelter, a Specimen Point of Collection Site (SPOC) and/or Point of Dispensing site (POD). When you are called on to participate, you are expected and it will be a part of your job requirement to participate, whether the emergency occurs during or outside regular work hours.

Job Responsibilities

Prepares and collects lab specimens, order/ship lab supplies, check patient vital signs, assist with clinic flow and clinicians as needed. Additional responsibilities include performing clerical and laboratory duties, i.e., providing testing, counseling, and linkage to care related to HIV, performing tests such urinalysis, pregnancy, and hemoglobin checks; cleaning equipment, performing test controls, completing CLIA proficiency testing, as well as data entry for vitals and orders.

Job Responsibilities & Performance Standards:

  1. Prepares client for procedures and examination. Assists with physical preparatory needs. Assists the clinician during the exam.

  2. Performs various laboratory tests, e.g. hematocrits, urine, sickle cell, lead and pregnancy tests.

  3. Measures height, weight and head and chest circumferences. Performs hearing and vision screening using appropriate methods. Records results on charts.

  4. Prepares clinic area by assembling and arranging equipment and supplies for each clinic in a timely manner.

  5. Arranges equipment in a manner most efficient for the clinician

  6. Cleans and assembles supplies and equipment in accordance with health department procedures and policies.

  7. Takes accurate vital signs.

  8. Assists clients in following the recommended therapeutic regimen by reinforcing instructions given by a nurse or doctor.

  9. Assists in the development and use of health education materials in the cultural context that is understood and accepted by the targeted population.

  10. Attends educational updates and workshops to keep abreast of advances in the health care field.

  11. Prepares record for clinician by documenting name, address and phone, medicaid and social Security numbers. Documents age as to year, month and day.

  12. Documents laboratory results and orthropometric data (or growth data) in the record appropriately.

  13. Maintains required reports for local, district and state audits as indicated by health department policy.

  14. Assists with general filing and retrieving of charts.

  15. Performs data entry of laboratory results, client appointments and desired treatment choices.

  16. Observes and documents patient data, behavior and activity

Minimum Qualifications

High School diploma/GED and six (6) months of experience in a related field; one (1) year of experience required at the lower level Health Aide 1 (HCS020) or position equivalent.

Preferred Qualifications: One or more years of experience in health services delivery. Possession of a license or certificate in a health services delivery field (e.g., certified nursing assistant, emergency medical technician).
