Job Overview

The Charge Nurse, who may be a Registered Nurse (RN) or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), plays an essential role in maintaining a productive work environment and ensuring quality care to the sisters. In this capacity, the Charge Nurse provides front-line leadership, creative problem-solving to address challenges and daily operational oversight. Reporting to the Nursing Supervisor, the Charge Nurse is responsible for maintaining unit morale, providing the highest standard of care, providing leadership to Health and Wellness team, and ensuring compliance with Federal, State, and Local regulations.

Duties and Responsibilities

Mission and Core Values

Leadership and Team Management

  • Conduct quality employee performance evaluations for assigned STNAs.
  • Responsible for the unit morale by providing a team-based work environment through effective team leadership and a demonstrated positive attitude.
  • Develop and maintain a good working rapport with inter-departmental and cross-functional personnel.
  • Facilitate floor communications by conducting regular meetings with team designed to identify and correct problem areas and/or the improvement of services in collaboration with nursing supervisor.
  • Empower and mentor team members by delegating assignments that aligns with their responsibilities.
  • Participate in the coaching and disciplinary process for performance.
  • Engage with residents during the shift and help create a positive, person-centered environment. Set an example by spending time with residents, talking, walking, or joining appropriate activities, and encourage CNAs to do the same based on each Sister's interests.

Clinical and Resident Care

  • Facilitate the admission, transfer, and discharge of sisters.
  • Actively participate in the delivery of hands on care of the sisters.
  • Complete preliminary sister needs, assessments and development of a written plan of care and kardex.
  • Assess and evaluate sisters' status changes and nursing needs daily, and as needed based on their level of care needs.
  • Administer medications and performs treatments as directed by the attending physician or designee.
  • Provide professional communication with all disciplines, out sourced services (such as Physicians, CURA, etc…), DPA's and families at all times.
  • Companion with sisters on doctor appointments, activity trips, emergency room visits, and Mass as assigned.
  • Consult the Nursing Supervisor and/or attending physician in the planning, treatment, and rehabilitation of assigned sisters. Ensures proper notification of appropriate personnel when a change in the sister's condition occurs.
  • Participate in the Interdisciplinary Care Conference Team and performs duties as specified.

Policy, Procedure and Compliance

  • Maintain confidentiality of all resident care information (HIPAA) and respect and adhere to all resident rights.
  • Work with the Nursing Supervisors to ensure compliance with Federal, State, and Local regulations that govern the long-term care industry.
  • Complete nurse documentation, medical forms, evaluations, and accident/incident reports in a timely manner.
  • Accountable for the proper maintenance of the administration, storage, and control of medications and medical supplies.
  • Remain current on applicable regulations and procedures by attending applicable seminars and training.
  • Complete all assigned documents and mandatory training by the specified deadlines.
  • Participate on committees for quality improvement as assigned/required.
  • Maintain current professional credentials and certifications.

Professional Development and General Duties

  • Attend and participates in all in-services, training sessions, and staff meetings as required.
  • Perform other duties as requested or required.

Skills and Qualifications

Education:

Required

  • Completion of RN/LPN program from an accredited School of Nursing.

Preferred

  • Associates or Bachelor's degree in nursing from an accredited university or college.

Licensure/Certification:

Required

  • Current RN/LPN license in the State of Ohio.

Specialized Knowledge/Skills:

Required

  • Demonstrated knowledge of applicable Federal regulations, Ohio State regulations and Ohio Board of Nursing Laws and Rules.

Preferred

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong leadership skills.

Kind and Length of Experience:

Required

Preferred

  • Two years of experience in long term care preferred.
