DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

The Office of the Chief Investment Officer is responsible for managing the University of California's retirement, endowment, working capital, and cash assets under the policies, guidelines, and performance benchmarks established by the Regents. The mission of the Office is to implement those policies and guidelines by selecting, executing, and monitoring investment strategies designed to add value over the benchmarks within a risk-controlled framework. The Office adheres to high ethical as well as professional standards in serving the investment management needs of its constituency and the Chief Investment Officer has full investment discretion. The leadership of the Office of the Chief Investment Officer (UC Investments) is responsible for the oversight and management of various asset classes by creating and monitoring relationships with new and existing managers, evaluating and selecting new external managers, and creating risk and investment guidelines for external managers. The Private Equity Director plays an important role in the supporting achievement of office-wide goals and investment outcomes.

POSITION SUMMARY

In collaboration with the Chief Investment Officer, the Private Equity Director plays a critical role in setting the private equity strategy and helping ensure the portfolio achieves performance targets. The ideal candidate will bring significant product knowledge and extensive experience in private equity to the role, which they can leverage to work on complex issues and deals that may have little or no precedent, potentially in collaboration with other asset class teams. The Director will exercise excellent judgement in selecting methods, techniques, and evaluation criteria for obtaining results and bring creativity to identification and structuring of investment opportunities. They will have significant internal and external contacts with potential to facilitate investment opportunities on behalf of the office.

Investment Management & Strategy

  • Lead due diligence on prospective investments from beginning to end, including primary fund commitments, co-investments, and secondaries. This includes assessing the investment strategy, management team, investment risks, portfolio valuations, reference calls etc.
  • Write clear and concise independent investment recommendations based on due diligence. Deliver high quality finished work product in a timely fashion. Provide fundamental analysis and research as part of the due diligence and clearly articulate findings and recommendations to the Chief Investment Officer in a collaborative fashion.
  • Take lead in legal negotiations and fund closings to ensure compliance with the Regents' policies.
  • Recommend investment ideas and/or opportunities to the broader Private Equity team for discussion and review.
  • Contribute meaningful comments on the merits and risks of investment opportunities and demonstrate sound investment decision making skills.
  • Manage relationship building with C-suite executives of select investments for the purposes of developing a pipeline of investment opportunities.
  • As needed, represent the University of California on advisory boards and provide comprehensive industry feedback and sound guidance to the General Partners as necessary. May lead restructuring of a fund by collaborating with the advisory board members and the General Partner.
  • Maintain active involvement with assigned private equity funds by attending annual meetings, having at least one touch point each year with each fund, documenting annual meetings, reviewing quarterly financial statements, and understanding significant valuation or policy changes. Attend additional meetings on behalf of the private equity team as needed.
  • Be able to speak in depth about each assigned fund/GP relationship. Contribute to hold/sell recommendation for public stock distributions from private equity funds as necessary.
  • Prepare and maintain standardized investment reports on fund managers in the portfolios, as well as those under consideration, and make recommendations for decision-making purposes.

Research

  • Conduct independent fundamental research and analysis within the due diligence process to identify, evaluate, negotiate, and monitor the performance of investments in the asset class.
  • Monitor fundamental research and identify industry trends and market intelligence and communicate the findings of such insights to the investment group.
  • Lead the Limited Partnership agreement review and ensure all aspects of closing a fund are being met from relationship and business perspectives.
  • Provide other research and analytical support as needed.

Risk analysis

  • Analyze and manage risk in the overarching "Risk Rules" framework at UC Investments, which emphasizes leverage, liquidity, concentration, and worst-case downside risks.
  • Consult with the Chief Investment Officer on the overall impact of an investment on the risk reward of the entire portfolio.
  • Monitor capital calls and distributions and contribute to liquidity risk management within the private equity portfolio.

Leadership

  • Encourage and support the growth and development of junior team members by collaborating to provide and/or identify development opportunities and providing timely constructive feedback
  • Providing guidance to Investment Officers and Senior Investment Analysts on their due diligence efforts.

  • Expert in developing recommendations and justification for the most productive course of action.
  • Expert ability to prepare and / or edit complex reports involving logical and quantitative analysis, so that it is clearly understandable by both technical and lay readers and effectively advances and justifies a specific proposal or set of recommendations
  • Expert interpersonal skills as demonstrated by the ability to interact with others in a consistently positive manner, exercise discretion and tact, and gain consensus in an environment where others may have strongly conflicting ideas and goals.
  • Expert verbal and written communication and presentation skills.
  • Expert ability to articulate ideas and issues clearly, concisely and persuasively to a variety of audiences.
  • Highly developed ability to be insightful and use creative skill in reasoning and logic, and in quantitative analysis.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Strong working knowledge of other asset classes is preferable but not required.

Education

  • MBA / CFA and 6 or more years of experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

This position is currently eligible for hybrid work arrangement. The selected candidate must reside in California and will be required to report to work onsite in Oakland, as business needs dictate.

This range reflects a wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience. The full salary range shows the growth potential for this position and the pay scale is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position.
