Position Summary

The Panel Quality Assurance (PQA) Technician performs testing, calibration, and verification of substation relay panels, distribution automation equipment, and associated control systems. This role ensures that all relay settings, wiring, panel assemblies, and protective devices meet design requirements, compliance standards, and client expectations. The technician works in field and shop environments to support commissioning, troubleshooting, and quality assurance of transmission and distribution substation equipment.

Key Responsibilities

Testing & Quality Assurance

  • Perform testing and quality assurance of transmission and distribution substation relays.
  • Calibrate protective relays and apply settings according to engineering documentation.
  • Conduct testing and verification of distribution automation equipment.
  • Complete all assigned activities efficiently, on schedule, and without interruptions to field operations.

Programming & Configuration

  • Program relay settings and verify proper device operation.
  • Verify wiring, I/O assignments, and panel integration accuracy.
  • Utilize relay test equipment and software to complete commissioning tasks.

Project & Field Support

  • Conduct field checks, wiring verification, and troubleshooting of substation control panels.
  • Collaborate with engineers, project staff, and utility personnel to ensure proper installation and adherence to project specifications.
  • Document test results, calibration values, and corrective actions.

Safety & Compliance

  • Follow all safety procedures, including lock-out/tag-out and substation access requirements.
  • Maintain accurate, compliant records of testing, calibrations, and inspections.

Qualifications

Education

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Completion of a technical program in Basic Electricity & Electronics (BET) or Applied Engineering Technology (AET) preferred.

These programs provide foundational training in electrical theory, electronics, control circuits, test equipment usage, and troubleshooting required for relay and substation work.

Experience

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in relay calibration, distribution automation equipment testing, or related substation work.

Knowledge

  • Protective relays and relay logic.
  • Relay test equipment and associated software.
  • Electrical testing principles and substation automation fundamentals.

Skills

  • Ability to operate test equipment and tools for wiring verification and calibration.
  • Ability to read wiring diagrams, schematics, and test procedures.
  • Basic PC skills and familiarity with electronic test tools.

Abilities

  • Apply test procedures across various substation equipment types.
  • Quickly learn new relay models, software, and testing methodologies.
  • Work safely in energized and non-energized environments.

ITS Level

  • Substation 100 (entry technical competency level for substation testing environments).

Working Conditions

  • Work performed in electrical substations, control houses, and outdoor environments.
  • Exposure to noise, electrical equipment, temperature variations, and energized equipment.
  • Frequent standing, bending, lifting, and climbing.
  • May require overtime, evening, or weekend assignments to meet project demands.
  • Travel to client sites required.

Job Types: Full-time, Contract

Pay: $ $35.00 per hour

Expected hours: 32 – 40 per week
