Position Summary:
The Shelter Coordinator plays a key leadership role in managing the daily operations of a homeless shelter. This position ensures the shelter is a safe, clean, and supportive environment for individuals and families experiencing homelessness. The Shelter Coordinator works closely with shelter staff, guests, and service providers to promote stability, dignity, and progress toward housing.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Oversee daily shelter operations including check-ins, bed assignments, curfews, and discharges.
- Supervise and schedule shelter staff and volunteers.
- Conduct intakes and orientations for new guests, explaining shelter rules and available services.
- Ensure a safe and respectful environment by enforcing shelter rules using a trauma-informed, guest-centered approach.
- Maintain up-to-date records, including intake forms, case notes, incident reports, and occupancy logs, submitting to the Director Assistant monthly.
- Support coordination of basic needs such as meals, hygiene supplies, laundry, and clothing.
- Review pet policy and verify pets are appropriate for shelter (vaccines, temperament).
- Verify guest vehicles are registered and have insurance prior to parking on property.
- Monitor guest well-being and address safety concerns or mental health issues. Forward to Solutions Specialist or crisis response teams as needed.
- Collaborate with Solutions Specialist to support individualized service plans aimed at transitioning guests into permanent housing and employment. This will include weekly meetings with Solutions Specialist in The Shepherds Hand office.
- Comfortably meet our guests' spiritual needs with prayer, scripture, and meditation. Refer to other staff members as needed.
- Liaise with community partners and emergency services as needed.
- Conduct regular safety and cleanliness inspections and ensure compliance with health, fire, and safety regulations.
- Respond to client conflicts and emergencies in a calm and professional manner.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Associate or bachelor's degree in social work, Psychology, Human Services, or a related field preferred.
- Minimum 2 years of experience working in a homeless shelter, residential setting, or social service agency.
- Knowledge of issues related to homelessness, including trauma, mental health, substance use, and poverty.
- Supervisory or team lead experience preferred.
- Strong interpersonal, conflict resolution, and de-escalation skills.
- Ability to work effectively in a diverse, fast-paced environment.
- Computer proficiency, including excel, data entry, and basic reporting are required.
- CPR/First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain).
- Bilingual (Spanish, or other languages) a plus.
- Must be able to pass background check and drug screening.
Work Schedule & Conditions:
- Must be willing to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, overnights, weekends, and holidays as needed.
- Work may involve standing for long periods, walking, and lifting up to 50 lbs.
- Exposure frequently to individuals in crisis; appropriate boundaries and self-care are essential.
