My client is developing a cutting edge clean technology, building novel systems and pushing the boundaries of electronics and chemical engineering. After one successful power electronics hire they are looking for someone to compliment their background.

This role is centered on designing high-performance resonant converters, SMPS architectures, and custom magnetics, with a strong emphasis on rapid iteration and translating ideas into real hardware.

The Role

This is a design-driven power electronics position with close involvement in early prototyping and hardware bring-up. You will architect topologies, design magnetics, own PCB layout, and quickly turn concepts into functional circuits. Hands-on work in the lab supports the design process, but the focus is on circuit architecture, analysis, and hardware design decisions.

What You'll Do


• Design and optimize LLC and other resonant converter topologies for high-efficiency, high-frequency applications.


• Model and simulate converter behavior (LTSpice, PSpice, Simulink) to guide design choices.


• Own power-stage design, including semiconductor selection, gate-drive strategy, switching behavior, thermal considerations, and EMI control.


• Lead PCB architecture and layout for high-voltage, high-frequency power stages.


• Design custom magnetics


• Participate in hardware bring-up, reviewing measurements, debugging issues, and refining designs through iterative prototypes.


• Collaborate with mechanical, firmware, and systems engineers to integrate power stages into full products.

Key Responsibilities

1. Resonant Converter Design

  • Architect LLC and other resonant structures; evaluate soft-switching conditions, gain characteristics, and component stresses.

2. SMPS & High-Frequency Design

  • Develop high-efficiency SMPS topologies for demanding operating conditions.
  • Address EMI, dv/dt, creepage/clearance, and multi-layer layout concerns.

3. Magnetics Design

  • Design and prototype custom magnetics
  • Optimize leakage, coupling, losses, and thermal behavior.

4. Hardware Prototyping & Bring-Up

  • Support rapid prototype builds and review test data to refine designs.
  • Guide technicians during assembly and debugging.

5. Thermal & Mechanical Integration

  • Define thermal solutions: heatsinks, potting, insulation, airflow.
  • Validate thermal assumptions through simulation or measurement.

Qualifications

Education


• B.S. or M.S. in Electrical Engineering (Power Electronics emphasis ideal).


• Coursework/thesis in resonant conversion, magnetics, or high-frequency design is a plus.

Experience


• 2–5+ years designing power converters or SMPS in R&D or product-development settings.


• Proven experience creating high-voltage or high-frequency circuits from concept to prototype.


• Strong background in PCB layout for power stages.


• Magnetics design experience preferred.

Technical Skills


• LTSpice/PSpice/MATLAB-Simulink simulation capability.


• Altium or KiCad proficiency for PCB layout.


• Strong understanding of switching behavior, thermal considerations, and EMI.


• Familiarity with oscilloscopes, analyzers, and typical bring-up tools.

Soft Skills


• Builder mindset with strong design intuition.


• Comfortable in fast-moving environments with limited structure.


• Clear communicator who explains complex electrical topics simply.
